Where is the best place to camp in our area? Thought i would never want to go camping again after the army, but kinda miss the woods.

1 night in the woods with my allergies and asthma, and I'll be at the emergency room the next morning

I'd much rather be in the a/c... Never saw the allure of camping. I want to wake up in my bed and take a shower

I was in a Army Cav unit myself ODXD9. Now days If I was going to camp it would be State Parks. http://www.tpwd.state.tx.us/spdest/
Oh come on.....if you paid thousands of dollars for the very best, top grade 1911 and some clown comes along and beats you with a $400 plastic pistol, wouldn't you hate Glocks too?-

I've been here a couple of times. Shallow little lakes and baby gators. It was 15 or more years since I was there last we had a great time. Great selection of types of camping.

Lake Livingston State Park was nice once upon a time, it's been almost 30yrs since I've been there though.
I think there's a KOA campground in Galveston, but haven't been on the island since the storm(s) a couple of years ago.

Brazos Bend state park is nice.
Parks in the Houston area tend to have the same problems as Houston itself, humidity and mosquitos. Having been camping since I was a kid, my advice would be to drive a couple extra hours and camp in the hill country. The scenery is better and the air is dryer.
With that in mind I really like Inks Lake state park, it has the bonus of being close to Marble Falls where there is dining and shopping (including a big WalMart for supplies).
Also Canyon of the Eagles has a very nice lodge (a little pricey but the views are great) and restaurant if you want the camping atmosphere with a comfy bed shower.

A shower AFTER - hahaha....

My point was that while I like to be outdoors during the day, I wouldn't make it thru a night...

The Huntsville State Park has a lake that is supposed to be good for fishing.  I myself have never fished there so I can't personally attest to it, but I have seen fish in the water and have seen many people fishing there.  It's a beautiful park.  I have a season pass to all Texas state parks so I go as often as I can.  In fact I haven't been camping in a while and me and the missus are probably going to go camp sometime in the near future.
