25 yards is what I shoot at to be precise
I like to shoot rapid at 7yards.
100 yards if I'm shooting 5.7. Lol

I'm often the guy shooting at 3 yards. I enjoy shooting self prescribed speed drills (double taps, Mozambique drills and point shooting). And I sometimes feel others at the range questioning the value of my work at 3 yards.

I also shoot 7 yards, but if my groups are scattered at 7, I reel her back in to the three yard mark to tighten them up.

With my carry piece, I can slice out the bullseye at three yards in one mag. Big deal right?  It is to me 'cause I'm doing it quickly and I'm generally paying more attention to trigger control, firing almost as soon as the trigger resets.

I'm also firing from unnatural stances, with immediately acquired holds, etc. I don't feel bad 'cause when I push out to 7 yards on a fresh target, I'm still getting results I find acceptable at a respectable pace.

I rarely fire off more than a mag at 15, 'cause I don't see well enough to identify the little 45 holes without reeling in to see how I did.

Using a 50 round box:

3 Yards (3 magazines with 4 rounds each firing from the hip)
7 Yards (3 magazines with 4 rounds each firing from the hip)
10 Yards (2 magazines with 5 rounds with a reload)
15 yards (2 magazines with 4 rounds each)
25 yards (2 magazines with 4 rounds each)

As you can see most of our shooting is done at 10 yards or less and almost half is done at the anchorpoint(hip) position.

For what reason?

It's my department's mandated training.  Our Chief of Police is a big proponent of "anchor-point" shooting(hip shooting)  And for good reason too.  Since he was appointed Chief of Police he made it part of our annual qualification and training.  It came in handy too.  The only police shooting in Perryton's written history happened last year in a trailer house during a family violence call.  The husband charged the officer with a knife from a distance of about 10 feet away.  The officer just had time to draw and fire from the hip.  He fired 5 shots and connected with all 5.  The man fell on top of the officer's feet.  Had he taken the time to extend his arms he may very well have been injured.

Anchor-point shooting is definitely worth practicing. For situations such as 40k described or contact distance encounters where you simply have to room for a typical shooting stance.

10 & 15 for precise work.

5 & 7 for double taps.

Mostly I shoot my semi-auto handguns at 15 and 25 yards: 1911A1, .380 Auto. I also do some benchrest shooting at 50 yards with a couple of my handguns, Ruger Blackhawk in .45LC, Ruger Mark II Government Target Model in .22LR.

Best,
Michael

I did some 15 yard shooting last week. I don't do it often, but it can be fun with the right gun. In a real world situation with the adrenalin going - I'm not sure how well I could shoot at that distance if my hands are shaking, though  :P

My .45ACP 1911 likes to go long.

I do the big bore challange with my 1911 for fun. Most guys shoot single shot Thompsons for this game. (No necked pistol cal. ammo)

10 shots at full size chickens (40 yards)
10 shots at full size pigs (50 meters)
10 shots at full size turkeys (75 yards)
10 shots at full size rams (100 meters)
