Which second caliber upper? AR
« on: September 06, 2019, 10:42:59 PM »
Been invited to go Hog Killin' (not hunting) and not sure my .223 / 5.56 will do the job on some of the hogs he's sent photos of! SO, 7.62x39 or 300AAC ?  Most practical?
I know the 7.62 ammo is cheaper by alot, and I don't see a suppressor in my future.

My BIL has done quit a bit of hog management with a .223 and that seems to work well for him.

223 will more than do the job with proper shot placement.

One of my customers main gigs is hog eradication from helicopters.

Almost all 223/556 or 7.62/39.

Interested in a trip? 600/hr for the ride.
Gun and ammo on you.
I can hook you up with them.
Just dont shoot the chopper.

No Thanks!
No more choppers for me!
I now have a place to go for free, just help kill the damn hogs, they are tearing up land and crops. Just a ways away, get there when I can. Really wish I hadn't sold my AR-10 !

We use ARs in 223 and 6.8spc. I absolutely love the 6.8spc, pigs don't. Hornady 120 grains SST in 6.8 isn't kind to them.

Imo, 223 will get it done, with proper shot placement, and no error.

But simply because there is usually BRUSH involved with hunting.
223's do not like brush. Heck, even high grass can mess up the bullets flight.

I always keep in mind when hunting,,,The .223 /5.56 was designed to make massive nasty wound channels. The KEY word being WOUND.

With 3 x's the bullet weight, the .30 cal will plow through some pretty heavy stuff , maintain its flight path, and still maintain excellent penetration.

I'd personally be using  the 7.62. Hogs have a tough hide.

Good luck and have fun busting pigs.   :thumbsup1:

Like most gun forums, you have to upload the photo to a photo hosting site.

A 223 can / will kill hogs pretty easy. The problem is most guy's don't use the right bullet with them to do it good. Varmint bullets, FMJ, and Match grade bullets for a 223 are the WRONG choice. I load 65 gr Sierra Game King, and the Speer 70 gr Soft Point for all my 223 hog killing loads. It is bad medicine for them,as well as deer.

I also kill them with my 6.5x6.8 wildcat AR,a 6.8 SPC II, and my LR-260 H large frame AR. I used to have a 458 SOCOM that was fun as hell killing hogs with, but the short useful range of that round made it worthless unless you were hunting under a feeder.

Use this web site to post pictures. https://imgbb.com/

It's free and simple to use. If you have problems give me a holler and I'll walk you through it.

I will one day get a 300BO for my Windham. Nice thing is (to me anyway) that my current upper is 762x39 and Windham uses a standard AR mag well so I can shoot .223/556 .300BO and 7.62x39 from same lower.

Not sure why pic is upside down.
