..sometimes ya just get bit on the bum..
« on: July 17, 2019, 01:25:33 PM »
.
(in for just a bit/cooling down)    my neighbor is sort of a milktoast and he probably shouldn't be living on the 20 acres next to mine because he really can't do well much of anything outdoors (this is not to mention that his wife is a real bit.....never mind)

got to talking to him this morning (he's a pharmacist and his hours have been cut back) and asked him about his JD Riding Mower - which blew it's engine.....says new engine "in" but blowing smoke so it's back in the shop and he keeps getting the run-around

felt sorry for the guy so I stopped my weed eating, got on the zero turn Spartan, drove over and asked if I could mow a little for him (get behind and it's hard to catch up) - he says "yeah, along the driveway"

so off I go - and don'tcha know I just "touched" one of his non-working light poles and the thing was so rusted out that it fell over, breaking the globes in the process

so - tell him I'd pay to have it fixed.....but like I said....."sometimes ya just get bit....."

lots of folks like that in Wood county now ( and pretty much statewide)
that move to the "country" to "live the country life" but can't really stand
to be away from all the city crap.
you can tell those because they wear out the roads to "town" and don't
stay at their "ranch" as much as they're gone somewhere else even though
they have a mini mansion that's totally out of place for the region they live at.

i was going to buy some land years back in Wood somewhere, but i got tired
of reading about all the thefts and dope busts and dope labs in the Winnsboro News
and ended up looking elsewhere

Some people are just not suited for the rural life. They THINK they are, but they tend to not know, or realize that living the rural life is not just always sitting back on the porch and enjoying the quiet solitude. It takes a lot of work and upkeep to keep a place in a livable condition. Even my own wife doesn't seem to comprehend this sometimes. There is always work to be done. Weather also plays a huge role in a work schedule. There is always grass to be mowed. Weedeating to be done. Limbs that need trimming. Fences that need mending. Fence-lines that need to be kept up. Trees that need to be cut down. Always something that needs doing. And the older you get, it even gets harder to maintain everything.

Like Tango, I know there are always tasks that need doing, but I wouldn't trade it for anything because I actually enjoy the work. I chose the rural life knowing there would always be work that needed to be done and it would be hard work. But, in the end, I can look out and be proud of the hard work.

No offense but looking at the pics Tangos place is not what I call rural. In the country yes large place yes but to me appears way to city. Fancy drive way plush yard etc.

Country places and country living means natural (more or less) landscapes not manicured lawns and all.

Looks like a rural subdivision to me.

You have a beautiful house and place but again I see a city house/yard in a rural setting.

Its what has happened in the outlying areas here.

Grew up in Bulverde/ Spring Branch in the 70s used to be few and far between. Now all the ranches have sold been cut up in to 3-5-10 ac tracts and all the city folks now are country folks except WM HEB CVS WB McDs etc has followed along.

Now the 281N drive that was pleasant many yrs ago is 30-45 min to go 20 or so mi and always bumper to bumper.

They all want the rural but cant(dont know how to) live with out the city convinces.

When I go to my land I know Im in the country. 3 mi of dirt CR and closest town is well not much other than 3 cross streets and a few houses.

Have to drive minimum 15 mi to get to any place ie a quick stop local gas/ice house.

Not a fancy house or dome up yard in sight.

The road to hell is paved with good intentions.
Politicians are like diapers, they should be changed often, and for the same reason.

There are two kinds of people in the world my friend. Those with loaded guns, and those who dig. YOU DIG.  " Blondie".

Well, any man that wouldnt cheat at cards for a poke, dont want one bad enough. " Gus".

Living rural has it's advantages for me. I lived and worked in big cities for many, many years. One of the few things I do miss about living in a big city is there is no shortage of great restaurants to eat at.

But, there is the peace and quiet from living rural. My closest neighbor is about a 1/4 mile down the road. There is for the most part very little traffic on our road. I like that we have quite a bit of privacy for the most part. I like being able to sit outside on a dark night and looking up and seeing billions of bright stars.

It takes a lot of work to maintain such a lifestyle of living rural, but for me, it is a labor of love.

None taken
As I am anything but envious of you Tango.
We each have our own idea of what we want.

My country place (when it becomes my only place in a few yrs) will be country in appearance Im not taking the city with me where Im moving.

Closest city will be (is) over 30 miles if you want more than a town.

I don't always enjoy the hard work, and sometimes that is due to the weather. Sometimes it's too hot, or too cold, but it still needs to be done. The enjoyment comes from the accomplishment of what is after the hard work is done.

I lifted this post from another forum just a bit ago, and had to LMAO.

Rural lifestyle is only for kids and retirees. If you wanna make something of yourself then you NEED urban lifestyle. You never hear about rural folks who stay rural and become successful because successful rural folks gain their success from urban lifestyle.

If quietness is all you seek, then invest in some noise cancelling headphones.

This youngster is 28, and lives in San Francisco, and has his entire life. I have to wonder, what he really knows about living a rural life. He also still lives at home with his parents.

some folks want and seek out commotion and uproar and seem to thrive on it.
i guess the young s.f. poster is one of those.
things like that always remind me of going to the lake (any one will do) and getting
way off somewhere in an isolated area to fish and relax, then some pinhead on a
p.w.c. comes out of nowhere to rip and tear and do donuts and stuff.
it's more or less "hey! i need an audience to show someone my neat p.w.c.
and show off all the neat things i can do! !  "
(in all fairness, i've had "bass pros" do that too )

at least i can get out in the far corner of my place and be still and
quiet and just hear the God-made noises and not have to listen
to anyone else's b.s. , and they don't have to listen to mine.

Interesting as there are several smaller towns and rural areas in the US that have high speed Internet access that are trying to lure Millennials who code or have Internet based jobs to their area with free land, rent and other incentives.
