..rain rain, go away..
« on: May 08, 2019, 01:52:21 PM »
.
been watching the weather channel - parts around houston are really getting "it" - Sugerland and Kingwood - of course parts of Kingwood always get flooded during periods of mucho rain, as the san jacinto river authority releases water from Lake Conroe

I've got 3 routes that lead from the homestead to the far back Pasture 1) across a seasonal creek  2) across a land bridge that crosses the creek (which leads to a neighbor's small lake)  3) via about a mile of blacktopped roads

with this rain of late fording the creek is impossible - the rain water in the creek is eroding the ground of the land bridge to the point that it's dangerous now to cross - so, that leaves blacktopped public roads

no point of concern now as it's too danged wet to think about heading that way for mowing, but.....

I seen the squirrels out in the yard putting life jackets on earlier! :wave1:

We got a decent rain late yesterday afternoon, and just another gully-washer just a bit ago. It was down-right flooding! And right before the rain hit, the wind was sure blowing hard.

started this morning and we're right at 3" of rain as of 4pm - closest internet weather (Tyler) shows it won't be quitting anytime soon

can see high water in the seasonal creek which is about 500 yards from the house - this should about "do in" the land bridge to the back pasture

This evening (Wednesday) Tomball got more rain (1.5inches) in 45 minutes then we did as a total  yesterday. My rain gauge showed 6/10s of a inch on Tuesday.

I need to get me another rain gauge. Mine broke a couple of years ago, when I left it outside full of water and it froze!

I have no idea as to how much today, but it was a lot.

I'm OK.
Got some sod and fertilizer out.
Also got some lime out where the dogs go.
Rain started slow so lime and fertilizer soaked in before down pours started.

Did have a lot of inside work:
Reloading, painting, and
write-up/pics for rifle I'm going to put on gunbroker.
Write-up is good. Pics still aren't to my liking, so will try again.
Concerned that I'll take a hit on this rifle as a 1st time seller.
So trying the get everything good.

Not great though!
Had to fix 2 flats on lawn tractor.
Somehow got into some thorns - Looked like prickly pear thorns, but NEVER seen any on place.
Hope I'm over whatever these are!

Trying to get roof reshingled  but supplier won't deliver untill two days of no rain forcast.  Dosn't want the supplied to get wet.  They are shingles-- they are designed to survive in rain.

i heard someone mowing (here in the city) earlier today just
after it quit raining. i thought, "what idjut is out mowing ?!?!".
it was at one of the rent houses, and they clogged up their
mower with wet thatched grass about every half a pass.
here, the back has standing water, and walking across the lawn in the
front is like walking across a bunch of wet towels.
SQUISH-SQUISH-SQUISH. . . .
i'm not gonna tear up a good mower or rut up the yard trying to
mow even though it needs it. that wouldn't be smart in any way.

Your current roof needs to be dry. Contractors don't want employee's working on slick surfaces.
New shingles that are wet are hard to grip and work with and trimming a wet shingle correctly ain't no fun.

Good point Alte. Roofing is usually a job that I farm out! I hate roofing work. I worked for a roofer one summer many, many years ago. I found out very quickly that was not a job I wanted to do for the rest of my life.

But I will say this, I got the best tan I have ever had that summer doing roofing!  :rocknroll2:

I'm really tired of it raining! I got up at 0600 just so I could mow my property before the rain gets here.

It wouldn't bother me if we had another drought spell for a while. I hate mowing any how.

6 days w/o rain here is the longest stretch since January. Looking at the radar now it looks like the heavy stuff will track north of us but as the day heats up you never know.

got it mowed here yesterday.
even after a few days of full sun, parts of the
back and about a third of the front were still
pretty squishy and swampy. i managed to
shovel the washed down mud (most of it) out
of the dip in the driveway, and only made one
bad rut with the mower wheel in the front.
if it hadn't needed it so bad, i wouldn't have
mowed at all, and still wouldn't have if it
hadn't dried out some, and also because
we're expecting another heavy rain at any minute now.

Anybody seen a star in the east or a big arc floating around?

I'm glad I live on top of a ridge (literally), because we just got an inch of rain in about 15 minutes and the back 1/3 of an acre is a small river.
