Gardening?
« on: March 16, 2019, 08:30:25 PM »
Anyone else planting a garden this year?

I started planning and planting mine about two weeks ago. Started out with some bell and jalapeno peppers in planters in the garage, along with some onions. Have some potato "eyes" being gotten ready to plant after the last frost has passed. Tomato seeds also being gotten ready to plant as well.

Soon as the last frost (supposedly around here 4/1/2019) has passed, I will start transplanting my plants I have in containers in the garage.

I'd like to do some carrots, beans, corn, okra, cucumbers and squash as well.

Usually do.
I keep it simple. Maters, Zuchini, acorn squash, some odds and ends, green beans, peas, onions, green peppers.

My wife loves fried green maters, I like fried Zuchini. The acorn squash I stuff with mushrooms and italian sausage and bake.
Green beans and peas the wife makes side dishes for dinner, and she puts onions and peppers in darn near everything.

I'm pretty much only planting vegetables I know that we will eat and use for something.

Some of what I'm planting is to be used for making homemade salsas. It's something I just recently got into and really enjoy making. So another item I'd like to plant, are some various varieties of hot peppers and such for making salsa.

Well my peppers are just starting to sprout! Woo Hoo!  :rocknroll2:

I'm going to get my tomato seeds ready today for planting later on  this week.

More onions to plant today as well.

a few tomato seeds were planted this last week.
i'll start some more in egg cartons in a week or two.
it's still fairly cool here.
peppers don't do well here unless it's warm for the season
and won't grow at all unless it's fairly hot midday.
anymore all i grow is cilantro, tomatoes, peppers, and since
last year's experiment, yard long green beans.
i haven't tried any okra or greens or anything else since
my boo-boo a few years ago. the ICU is the crappiest
place i've ever been.
onions are too cheap here to invest time and water in.
any beans that will be dried are also too cheap here to
be worth the time and water and growing space required
to grow them.
the last okra i planted made a poor quality pod so i no longer
try to grow it. same for squash. great foliage but poor fruits.
the yard long green beans were last year's experiment, and
grew and produced like crazy. i filled a freezer and gave away
many gallon bags full. very little care is required.

I moved my plants outside to get some fresh air and sunshine, since it was such a beautiful day outside. Finally got around to mowing the grass that needed mowing badly, and pretty much scalped the area of grass where I plan on putting the small garden. Even raked and collected the grass clippings to start a compost pile for next year. Might even get to use it this year, maybe.

i'd like to mow, but it's too wet to do a proper
job of it. a lot of the neighbors have mowed,
but now they have mower ruts in their yards.
(not that they can tell anyway since they stay
impaired most all day every day)

I mowed yesterday and this morning. At least the drier spots! No ruts though.  :th_thicon_idea:

I'm very anal about my yard. I like my yard to look very nice. It's sometimes hard with the dogs, because they like digging for the gophers! It's a lot of time to keep it looking nice, but in all honesty, I do really enjoy the work.

I'll post some pictures later of the front and back yard.

I'm starting one next weekend. I have all the stuff. My son wants me to wait on him to go at it.

The wife picked up some vegetable seeds, two bags of potting soil, and some square planters for her herbs we are going to plant.

Going to plant my tomato seeds today.

Well I got some of the potatoes planted yesterday. Went over to the cow pasture, and scooped up a load of "pasture patties" to mix in with the potting soil and dirt for the mounds for the potatoes. Got two pans of tomato seeds planted as well. Two pans of cayenne peppers planted  as well.

mowed the front and the alleyway yesterday.
had a few ruts and muddy spots left behind.
can't mow the back until i get the battery either
to take a charge or replace it.
still need to get to the outpost and run the shredder,
that is if my tractor repairs hold up long enough.

Between September and mid March this year I've had almost 70 inches of rain. 40-45 inches an annual norm. My place is on a slight slope and all that water has washed away most of the St. Augustine on my lot. Last Thursday, with no rain for six days, I was able to walk around and assess the damage w/o sinking two or three inches in mud.. Besides the grass the water washed away the foundation of our flat stone patio, just off the deck, so that will have to be rebuilt. Water got under the foundation in the SW corner of the house. We installed a drain there a few years ago so I'm hoping it did it's job. Had a lot of runoff there but can't really tell if there is any damage to the slab. Needs to dry out a little more.
Going to get truck load of dirt and a s*** load of grass pallets next week. Still need a few more days w/o rain.

I'm planting additional sprinklers this year.  Does that count?

Just how do you harvest them? When do you know when to harvest them?  :wave1:

More potatoes planted yesterday. Also got the watermelons planted as well.

Was going to plant cucumbers, carrots and squash today, but it's raining, so maybe if it stops later, maybe this afternoon.

Also got some flower bulbs transplanted into pots yesterday as well.

you hire a border jumper to mow and he'll harvest the
sprinkler heads wit his lawn cooting macheen, then quickly
load up all his gear and flee  :th_thicon_lol:

Nope.  Tuesday is trash pickup day.  You pick new sprinkler buds on Thursdays.
