Selling a used car
« on: November 28, 2018, 08:18:33 PM »
I forgot what fun it is to sell a used car.
Mom passed last year and Dad quit driving recently.  So I agreed to sell his car for him.

2011 Lexus ES 350, nice sedan, 38K miles.  Should be easy right?
3 people are interested before an hour goes by after the ad goes live.

First guy is really pushy, wants me to tell him what's the lowest I'll sell it for without ever having seen the car.
Kelly Blue Book for private party trade is 14.7K
I suggest he comes and see the car first.
Replies he doesn't want to waste his time, just give me a bottom price.

So I tell him I'll sell it for "1 Dollar.  If it's the right dollar."
He doesn't get it. (As in the right dollar is a 1901 uncirculated Morgan Silver dollar worth about $1/4M).  I tell him we're done.  He still doesn't get it.  Bye.

The other 2 people were actually very nice to deal with.  They'll get a grand off the Ahole.  :)

A '11 Lexus ES 350 with 38k miles? Hell, the engine isn't even broken in. If the body is OK, no accidents, interior decent, non smoker, garage kept, regular maintenance, AWD, etc, I'd start at 16K and take no less than 13.
If I was in the market for a used car for 14-15 K I'd be all over that. Besides routine stuff Toyota's V6 engines are basically maintenance free. If your in no hurry to sell it hold out for the right buyer.

friends around the tables. puts on the glasses, looks at a nice mint something
or other and turns to peanut gallery " i saw one of these online for $3.00. . "
but he surely didn't buy it even though you couldn't buy 1 replacement screw
for the something or other for the $3.00 let alone a complete mint something
or other.)

Yeah dealt with that when we were leaving the UAE, guy came over and took a flashlight and proceeded to give the car a thorough combing over and then came in with an offer about 8k under. When I declined his offer he kept telling me my car wasn’t worth what I was asking for it. Then this guy kept texting and calling me for over a week trying to get me to sell it to him.
