Hot ammo in a car? Dangerous?
« on: August 15, 2018, 12:18:54 PM »
I had never heard of this in over 15 years of being on gun forums, until yesterday...

A few people (on another forum) were claiming that if you leave a firearm in a very hot vehicle (summer time), that the heat could affect the ammunition...if it is fired when it is that hot....

The gun is fine, but with the ammo being so hot - if you had to fire the gun, the heat would cause the bullets to have too much pressure... which in turn, could cause you to blow up the gun.

Anyone else ever hear of this?

It can get over 150 or 160F inside of a vehicle in the summer... many of us occassionally leave a gun in the car for a particular reason. I learned to use polymer guns if I do this, as a metal gun gets too hot to hold. But in over 20 plus years of having guns, I never heard of this until yesterday...

I'm calling BULLH*T

Temperatures of ammo does have an effect on long range shooting..  But it's not blowing up their guns.

Bullet setback/poor chamber support  would likely be your culprit.

I will admit that in over 20+ years of owning guns, I have NEVER heard of this before. Was just wondering if anyone else knew of any truth to it. I am thinking you are correct

I looked a long time to find the thread I saw yesterday - I am on so many gun forums, I could not remember which one it was on.

It is here: https://www.firearmstalk.com/threads/effects-of-extreme-heat-on-handguns.128380/

So buried in one of the last posts is the fact the person claiming damage was a reloader.. perhaps a few too many grains??
Think we have far too many years fighting in the middle east for this just to come to light.

SAAMI would disagree with the original point and have tested “hot ammo”.

And a campfire. Stupid kid I was. .22 was the caliber.

You don't put ammo in campfires, you put fire extinguishers into campfires
