Need help
« on: August 06, 2018, 02:44:16 PM »
I have been testing a new stainless steel Stanley cup 5 in. (H)  3in (C)  to boil water on my pocket stove and the water gets hot but does not boil

When I por the water in the sink in the back building ... so I can do another experiment ...  I get a large steam cloud so I know it's hot

Is there any same size cup that will work better

Is it just a single thin walled stainless steel cup or is it one of those double walled jobbers?
Basically stainless steel is a poor conductor of heat. Try a similar aluminum cup. If you you can't boil water in an aluminum one, your stove does not produce enough heat.

I finally got the water to boil

I remembered I had some square tablets and tried them, two stacked together will get the water boiling

I also found out it takes 5 of the smaller round tabiets to do the same thing

a single wall cup or container should boil easily with the right fire.
is it still shiny, or is there some soot burned onto it ?
a sooty container will take the heat better and boil faster.
i never clean the outside of cook vessels i use on fires, just
clean the inside and wrap it with a piece of old cloth or an old
sock for carry to preserve the blackened outside.

i've had poor luck with the old purple trioxane if that's what you have.

the tabs from coghlan's that academy used to sell work good when they're
first opened, but tend to be crappy the longer they've been opened. i guess
the moisture from air etc. . . .

i mostly just use twigs in my pocket cooker or with the canteen cup stove
i use.

Finally found something that will work

I tested a Alpine 775ml stowaway pot by MSR and with 3 small round tablets or 2 large square tabs it will start boiling at 6 minutes

The pot is 2.5 in tall and 5.5 in across and fits in my BOB
