Longest Handgun shot you've made: Target or hunting
« on: June 25, 2018, 09:54:19 PM »
What's the longest shot you've made or tried with a handgun?
At the local indoor range max target distance is 25 yards.
Wondering what you guys have ever reached out to target or hunting wise.

With soon to be wife (been married 45 years so this was awhile ago) at my brothers place walking out to the stock pond. As we topped the crest of the ridge overlooking the stock pond I saw a partially submerged can on the opposite side of the water probably 50 yards or so away. I had a 4 inch S&W Model 10 on my hip. I asked my wife "you see that can?" and did a cowboy style quick draw and hit the can knocking it about 5 feet in the air. My wife said WOW! and I just nodded and blew the smoke from the barrel and reholstered.
A one in a billion shot. My brother looked at me and rolled his eyes. "you couldn't do that again in a million years" "Yeah but don't tell her that."

We shoot my Blackhawks out to 150 + yards quite a bit.

The 6.5  bbl  Single six in 22 mag are some of the most accurate.
One that surprised me was a 357/9mm convertible 6.5 bbl with the 9mm. My Dad can hit a tie cut off @ 150 really well.

My 327 FM in Blackhawk is deadly accurate @ 150. Ive shot a coyote @ about 125 with it.

The reality is, these are all stock open sights,, so I think we do pretty well.
My Dad is actually better at it than I am. The only rest we usually use is just setting the grip on the porch railing.
I shoot my CZ 75 @ the 100 yard target all the time. Makes things interesting.  :th_thicon_idea: :th_thicon_idea:

I don't remember ever shooting beyond 15 yards with a pistol - never a reason to shoot further

Back in the 60's I had a Ruger Blackhawk in .44 mag and at an old dump we had plenty of things to shoot at and
my longest shot at that time was about 100 yds. at a 55 gal drum.
I was in my 20's and had good eye site at that time.

I was in my 20's, back in the day. I had a Ruger Blackhawk in .22 mag with interchangeable cylinders and 12" bbl. I was sitting on a very steep hillside looking down over a river. About 500 yards out in the middle of a river stood a pole out of the water 3 feet or so. It was about the diameter of a telephone pole and was part of the old bridge. I leaned back with the gun on my knee and fired a shot. About three second later, after seeing no splash or hearing anything, I was about to take another shot. Just then we heard the knock as it hit the pole.

second: not a long shot, but still a great story,  :)

I was in my 40's and was at camp with the guys to get our deer stands ready and cut our shooting lanes. We were done and waiting for the grill to get hot when some one pulled out a box of clays. It was nothing fancy, several guys in lawn chairs, one guy slinging plates, and one guy shooting.
I was talking to the guy that was shooting so he wasn't re-loaded. When the guy chucked the clay, the shooter wasn't ready. So I quick-drew my department issue 38. special and in one shot, shattered the clay. Of course I acted like it was nothing, and they asked me to do it again. Nope, I was done for the day.  :th_thicon_lol:

One time in the very early 1980's, a friend of mine ask me to go to a new range with him.
He had 2 revolvers he had inherited from his Dad.

One was a S & W 357 mag, seems like it had about a 5.5 bbl.
The other was a Ruger Blackhawk 357 mag w/ 6.5 bbl.

He said something was wrong with the Ruger, he couldn hit nothing with it, which was why he ask me to go,, to see if we could figure out what was wrong with the Blackhawk.

When we get to this brand new range, I started shooting the Ruger at the bowling pins 15 feet away on the pistol range. I didnt see nothing wrong. I was hitting the pins just fine. Well, that got boring real quick, and I was really liking this blackhawk,

So I steped over to the rifle range where they had steel sihlouettes of  pigs, sheep, turkeys, etc, out to the 100 yard line. I started in @ 25. No misses, 50 no misses, 75 no misses.
He was also using the Smith, and same same, he could miss with the S&W.
We switched revolvers and couldnt hit shit.
Switched back, couldnt miss.  :thinker:

Bout that time we decided to go out and set the steel back up.
Every steel plate we shot had a hole clean through it.  :afraid4:

Since nobody was around but us, we set things back up and skidaddled. .

I been a Ruger Blackhawk fan ever since. I tried to buy that gun, he wouldnt sell it of course, but i went right out and bought 2 new blackhawks. A 357 and a 22 mag. I had a couple of each ever since.

The grip just suits me and  I shoot them really well.
Funny thing is, while I own and like the GP100 and SP101, I dont shoot them near as well as I do a Blackhawk.

50 yards is about the furthest I have shot with any regularity. I did do some 100 plus yard shooting with a friend's Contender some years ago for testing loads for him. That was fun.

My buddies and I get together at our property several times a year for with weekends but we usually end up spending most of out time shooting. There are always several different stages with money on the line for each stage.
We mostly carry striker fired pistols with the occasional 1911 thrown in the mix. We use the 100 yard range for tie breakers. Glocks and FNs are extremely accurate at that range but I'm not sure how effective the ammo would be on a live target. I've read that 50 yards is about max effective range for 9mm.

When Target moved into Dallas in the late 60's / early 70's, they had their big sign along the 635 loop.  The school bus I rode went by it every day.  After a few weeks, we noticed there were some holes in it (both sides).  They fixed it.  Same thing a few weeks later.  Not long after that there was an article in the newspaper about Target moving to town and they'd appreciate it if people would not shoot at their sign.
(It wasn't me, the school bus driver wouldn't let me bring Boomer onto the bus)  :scream3:
