The OFFICIAL 1911 Thread!
« on: May 13, 2011, 06:15:47 AM »
Now that we have no "Groups" anymore, I thought I'd start these threads... Previously, there was a "group" for each manufacturer... One could talk about that brand and/or post pics.

Anyway, if ya got a 1911 and are proud of it, this is the place to do a yee haw or post up a pic or whatever!

Shot my new SA Loaded 9mm today. What a great shooter! very accurate and hardly any felt recoil compared to my TRP.
Only issue is the SA mags are terrible! They didnt lock the slide back 90% of the time. I'm waiting for some Wilson Combat 9mm mags to be back in stock. Surprisingly they're more than expensive than their 45 mags for some reason...a lot more (+$10). But definitely worth it.

Also going to order some new grips, the cocobolo grips that come on it are way too slick.

A few hundred more rounds through it before deciding on the custom work!

My fav mags are Tripp Cobra mags. They are like $32 or $34 each.

I've heard so many people complain about various mags (including myself at times) that it makes me wonder why a company that can make a good gun can't make decent mags?

I agree. Wilson Combat, Chip, and Tripp seem to be the most reliable mags from what ive heard

I had issues with one CHip Power Mag. I called them and they just claim tos end it in. I did, and they sent it back. They replaced the insides but not the mag body.

After a while, it started happening again with that 1 mag. It seemed that the body was out of spec, and it was pinching the rounds inside of the mag body.

I ended up tossing it, as I had given them 1 opportunity.

I no longer have 45 mags since I sold my 45 cal 1911. But, if I ever got another, I'd only buy Tripp mags.

On a side note, I have owned probably 6 Springfield 1911s over the years. I have never had a problem with the factory mags in all the years.

But to save a few $ - you can order Tripp rebuild kits, and just replace the insides of your Springer mags if ya want.

I NEVER buy or use used mags. Just a quirk I have. Someone gave me two 1911 mags once. Because I may rely on the mags for self defense one day - I went ahead and replaced the insides with Tripp Research rebuild kits. Always worked 100% with the kit.

I have 4 of his power mags in 9mm, and they do load better than the Springer 9mm 1911 mags. But, the springers do run 100%.

i didnt have any trouble with the Springer mags on the EMP or TRP or any of their polymer pistols (XD, XDm) but these 9mm mags only locked the slide back once or twice. Im hoping its just the mags not the gun. But i dont like them anyway so i just ordered two Wilson Combat 9mm mags.

Big decision i need help with before i order a new MSH.
I dont know which FS treatment i want:
20LPI
25LPI
Serrations
Chain Link
Golf Ball

I like the way the chain link and golf ball look but dont know about effectiveness.
I have 20LPI on the TRP and i like it but supposedly much sharper on the Stainless Steel frames and this is a range gun
I have the 25LPI on the EMP and i like it just thinking about something different

Any input?

I have tried everything but golf ball. My fav I have ever had were just serrations on the PDP Defender. To me, they gave a better grip than regular checkering does. The 20 LPI checkering is the only checkering that works well  but almost TOO well. When I had a TRP, I had to open and close my hand to move it when adjustive the grip on the front strap. It's almost too sharp.

And, the chainlink and 25 LIP checkering I have now doesn't work as well as rubber grips across the front strap does. But, I liked the serrations by themselves.

im not a fan of rubber grips. i dont know about the serrations, my (i mean my dad's) beretta had serrations and it seemed ok, not spectacular. but i may decided to go with serrations on the FS. The MSH is already serrated. And i want to serrate the top of the slide as well. so it may go well with the the theme! (plus its probably significantly less expensive)
