I am a retired Marine officer, 1969-1989, infantry in Nam, then flew A-6s.  Currently teaching at a private university.

My two cents, and no offense to young vets who might feel differently, but frankly I am tired of being thanked for my service, forty years too late.  I had to cope with the post Viet Nam sentiments, the recruiting wars after the draft ended, and even being uncomfortable wearing the uniform in certain places.

If citizens would really like to thank us for our service, they should support better medical care and pay funding, the VA, etc.  So, I guess I'm turning into a curmudgeon.

I hear ya. I'll refrain from the thank you. But as for supporting better benefits, our government seems to have stopped listening to us. So, not much anyone can do anymore.

Service members were treated like crap during/after Nam so I can certainly understand you feeling that way.
As Ship said, the Gov. hasn't been listening much but most indeed support better care for Vets.
And many of us donate to private groups that seek to help more.

That's what I hear ohrah. My grandfather is a retired Red Horse from Vietnam and while he feels the same about the thankless sentiments received, and tells me often, he LOVES his medical care at the VA. Only person I know that uses the VA that feels that way.

This is probably a unique one as this would not happen today in the post 911 world.

In college in the late 1990s I was an auxiliary campus police officer in Alabama. Our Campus police were considered to be sworn officers, which was not common at the time. We basically did foot patrol around campus and ride alongs with the real campus cops. Never had much excitement except for busting a fraternity moonshine still once.

We could be deputized as full officers though and during my three years of doing this we often were for crowd control during sporting events or other things. We had a country singer ( I forget who) that was on campus one time to use the weight room when there were in the area doing some hunting and of course we had to keep people away, but not make it obvious.

US NAVY RM-2(SS) 79-87.  TAXAS ARMY NATIONAL GUARD PFC 90-93.   So I've been a sailor and a soldier.  It did suck losing that much rank.  Was a frocked E-5 when I left the NAVY.
