I consider 4 to be the minimum but have a couple with less with the intention of getting them to that number at least.
For competition guns or those that are likely to be used for defense if the SHTF, I'd like to get up to at least 10.

I have 20 mags per double stack gun and for my single stack 1911s I have about 100 mags. The high number of 1911 mags is in part because each one came with a minimum of two, except my SIGs which came with 4 each, and I have a LOT of 1911s.

They are all loaded and I cycle them between range trips usually bringing between 20 & 30 1911 mags per trip:

Obviously, I have a lot for my Berettas. I think 22.

But, I have three unused ones on the side for the 92 I will give my son. So, technically I have 19 for my three Berettas (since I will give him the fourth one eventually)

But usually, I get a minimum of six per handgun. I already have that amount for both my P99 and PPQ. And, I finally got around to getting a sixth magazine for my shield. I always try a. New magazine out before I put it into rotation. So, I still have it on the side...

I think we have a winner!

I'm only up to the low double digits.

I'm new here, but I'll throw in my 1/2 pennies' worth...
Minimum of 5 until you know the "rank" of the pistol in your own stable...then a bunch more if you determine it's truly a pistol you would want to go to battle with...even if it's only an imaginary battle.

10 per Beretta. I only have 5 for my 1911 and 2 for my Neos. Going to work my 1911 up to 10 mags as well.  My AR is up to 16, I still pick one up when I come across them for 15ish. (Windowed Gen 2)

I currently have 9 for my SCAR, but it is a fairly new gun. I usually keep a minimum of 12 for a rifle. I need at least 3 more... Gen 3 Magpuls with the window

But, this question was geared mainly towards handguns.

Four... one for the gun, one for the belt, with extras to rotate duties.

I've been shooting a long time, and except for springs, I have never worn out a magazine (follower or tube).

I spend most of my money on ammo (and reloading stuff) instead. IMO, a pile of empty mags are pretty useless, unless you are hoping they become outlawed and will become trade fodder.

4-5.  Depends on the capacity.  I like to have loaded about 50-60 rounds, so depending on the mag capacity, it can be as little as 3(20) for my 5.7, to 4(12) for my 6906, and 8(5@15 & 3@17) for my PPQ; but that's due to finding a guy divesting of his PPQ stock and a bulk deal.  I'm debating on adding mags for my 1006 2(9), but it's really for hunting back-up, hiking in bear country, so if I have to use it I won't likely be able to change magazines in the pinch.  The .44 mag and .357 mag revolvers all have three speed loaders, but again that's for hunting backup.

For my XDM 9mm 3.8 compact I have 6 13rounders, my XDM 9mm 4.5 I have 10 19rounders, my XD40 Service I only have 3 12rds. Now if you add the AR15 mags its north of 30.

I work to have at least 4 but usually buy some when good deals are to be had.

For my HiPower I have two.  For my .380 Government I have 4.  For my 1911s I have over 100 plus those that came with the guns.  If purchased NIB, the mags are still there.  I got a bulk deal at a shop going out of business years ago.  For my 9mm 1911 I have 2.

I like to have at least 4. 4 is good with high cap mags that way I don't go thru my ammo so quickly.
