Hello everyone
« on: July 05, 2018, 10:54:35 PM »
Hello Everyone, Not in Texas, desperately trying to move around the fall if I can find a location and a job. Not LEO or Mil, but after my father passed (who was LEO) I started to get my self in shape with the hope of joining a department. Problem is everything in IL has a age that I a past (i am 38), not to mention IL sucks so If anyone can offer advice on locations in Texas I would be very grateful. If it turns out I am past my prime to become a full time LEO I would still like to become a Reserve Deputy. Thanks everyone and look forward to talking with you.

Welcome aboard.

As for the police thing, I don't know. I guess ask around at various departments when you get here. Smaller departments may be willing to take someone older.

Not sure if it interests you but the Border Patrol age limit is 40. Their web site says exceptions are made for individuals with a military background and those with past federal law enforcement experience.
Good Luck

I thought the max age for any federal job was 35 (unless it is a political job). I had tried to become a federal probation officer years ago, and the cut off age for most federal govt jobs is 35. Or, at least it previously was....

Hi Shipwreck,

http://work.chron.com/requirements-border-patrol-jobs-13729.html

This is where I saw that. (Dated June of 2018) Maybe this is new since you tried.
Not sure if they changed it because they are having such a hard time filling all the jobs. I have a friend who is border patrol and he says they are several 100 positions behind federal mandated hires.

"You must be a U.S. citizen or resident under 40 years of age to qualify for a job as a border patrol agent. Exceptions are made for individuals with a military background and those with past federal law enforcement experience."

Good luck, Jonny!!!

Texas Commission on Law Enforcement is here: https://www.tcole.texas.gov/content/career-texas-law-enforcement
It should answer the majority of your questions

Big city police departments and county sheriff departments have their own training and certification academies. Other municipalities depend on regional law enforcement academies. With these smaller venues it is possible to go through the academy and certification process without a sponsor as in a sheriff or police chief. It's a six month program and I know the one in Brazos County, where I live, have both day and night classes. It is expensive. I believe it's 5K but it may be more now. I know several current and retired law enforcement officers that did this. Having your certification prior to applying for a LEO position is very attractive to smaller departments as it saves them the expense of putting a new hire through the academy.
Some counties require non certified applicants to work in the county jail and complete their new hire probation prior to being eligible to apply for the academy.
I've known several people that have used both routes as I described. The oldest, that I personally knew,  was 58 when he went through the academy. I m not aware of any age limit.

jonny,

WELCOME ABOARD.

Here in TX, you will likely be hired by any number of smaller/rural departments, as well as any number of city/county "park police" agencies, "special purpose districts" & ISD departments.

The TP&WD is also recruiting State Parks police officers.

Btw, ALL sworn police officers here have Statewide authority. = NO "local or district only" officers, as some States have.  Also, TX does NOT swear-in private citizens as LEOs as some States (like SC & VA do) do.

Addenda: At 71YY, I've been recruited by 2 small/rural departments & by several ISD police agencies.

BEST WISHES, satx
