..new mower..
« on: July 25, 2017, 05:04:59 PM »
.
my well used Cub Cadet is in the process of shooting craps so decided to use it as a dedicated trailer pulling, Horse poop picker-upper Prime Mover and get something more "stout" to mow our smallish pastures and lawns - so after some research and visual inspection of what's available, went out today and bought a Spartan zero turn mower

https://spartanmowers.com/

got the 54" cutting deck (so it'll fit on my utility trailer if need be) and the Kohler engine vs the Briggs

my Wife really likes mowing so this'll probably wind-up being her machine (and I'll continue with the daily Horse Pood Detail with the old Cub Cadet)

My 1995 Cub Cadet I bought new, ( last year cub actually owned and built them, with GREASE FITTINGS,,)  It started getting pretty tired last year, and justifiably   so. I have 10 acres, and its ALL hill. So that old girl did me a fine job over the years. Never had a lick of trouble with it. Year 15,  I had to replace the battery, that was it. Now it does the same thing. Hooked to a lawn trailer.

I got lucky and found a new left 2014 over 4 x 4  Kubota 2920 w/ 60 inch deck and front end loader.  I actually found (2). One was in College Station Tx  and I missed it by about 1 hour. The one I got was shipped up from Ohio.

What a cadillac that thing is. I dont know how I lived without it.  The 4 x 4 was badly needed for my  steep sidehill property.  plus I can plow snow with it, take care of small landscaping jjobs, etc. The bucket comes in handy. .  2014,, so it dont have any of the new pollution crap on it. I hope its my last mower.  :thumbsup1:

10 acres with a riding mower :afraid4:

You just restart mowing when u finished?

I learned a long time ago that inches matter... mowers esp. every inch can save a lot of time.

I also learned, and seen umpteen times over,,, the bigger mower you get, the bigger the lawn gets and the more you mow.

So you are still spending the same amount of time on the tractor. .  :P

I would have loved to buy a Mihindra 1533 (or thereabouts) but for my little place (3 acres without that much dirt work to do) it would be hard to justify

and actually, it's my Wife that loves to mow (but I know she'd love the dirt work).....

anyway, hopefully this'll be a good machine for us

i can't see owning an ag-type tractor for just a couple of acres.
(i did have an old boss that did though)
anything that couldn't be done with a regular lawnmower
i'd hire it out to be done.

I guess that wording was misleading,, sorry.

I have 10 acres, but only mowed about 2 with the old  Cub. For bout 20 years I had a Ford 8N with a 5 ft  brush hog. . I would mow  whatever else I could on the steep hills with that.

This 29 HP Kubota can do it all now,  as it also has a 3 point hitch w/ PTO. I got the 60 inch belly mower, front end loader, rear 4 ft box blade,  and 4 ft bush hog for it.   Much safer since I can go up and down the hill now instead of sideways. .  :thumbsup1:

I got a Honda  1048 back in 1984  and it still runs as good now as it did when I first bought it.
Other than replacing the battery a couple of times and had the starter rebuilt and replacing the
bearings on the mower deck  once over the years it is still going strong.
I think I will keep it for a while longer. :th_thicon_idea:

There are companies that produce really good gear, Honda being one of them.

not you in particular. i've known of quite a few folks
that had or wanted one for a small acreage. a
friend that lives out in a rural subdivision has a
neighbor with like a 100'x60' lot and they were
asking me about recommending a tractor with a
front end loader for them to buy. and some others.
one of the neighbors here has front yard that is
maybe 60'x40' and has a big zero turn with a 5' deck. :thinker:
