Outdoors / Bear encounters
« on: September 02, 2019, 06:34:07 PM »
I've had a couple of encounters with bears in the wild and both ended peacefully w/o confrontation.
Ever since the first one some 40 years ago I've been interested in stories about the largest land predator in North America especially ones where handguns were used in defense.
I came across this thread yesterday and spent the better part of two hours reading the different stories. Each   section is divided by handgun caliber used and a link to the original publication is provided. There are some great and frightening stories here that made me think "Damn could I have done that?"

IOLA, Tex. (KBTX) -- The Grimes County Sheriff’s Office says there is no threat to Iola ISD after they searched a student for a weapon on the second day of school.

Investigators say on August 22, an old picture of a male student was posted on social media from when he was 9-years-old. The photo that was taken years ago showed the child and an adult shooting in the country with the child holding a pistol.

The Grimes County Sheriff’s Office says the student was immediately pulled out of class, searched, and officials found no weapon on the student. The case has been referred to the Grimes County Attorney’s Office to review for any possible charges.

Iola ISD says they cannot release if there was any punishment for that student.

WTH "referred to the Grimes County Attorney's to review for any possible charges". Someone enlighten me as to what law was broken. The kid has a years old photo of himself posted on bookface or something holding a pistol and someone deemed this a threat?
Over the years I've posted several photos on various websites, including this one, of my grandson and I shooting handguns and long guns at the range. Is this something I should be worried about. Are you guys going to snitch on me?
Iola is a one stoplight town about 30 miles NE of College Station.

Your a justice involved person...... :sick2:

In the late 70's I lived in California for three years. 60 miles south of San Francisco. I came to the conclusion after I was there for awhile that some folks that live there just aren't wired the same way many of us are. I mean who even thinks of crap like this. Don't want to hurt the feelings of convicted felons, pedophiles, murders and sex offenders my a**.  I guarantee you criminals ain't worried about your feelings when they put a gun in your face, steal your car or break into your home.
As someone that worked in some type of law enforcement for close to forty years I have no empathy for criminals and am apathetic about their "feelings".

That when your AC unit has a problem it makes self known at 2 AM on a Sunday or a Holiday. My AC fan motor bearing decided to give it up this morning and I had to shut it off. Sounded like someone was beating a metal shovel against the outside bedroom wall.
For years my brother in law had a part time gig doing HVAC repair so we put out an SOS to him and he showed up about noon with all his tools. My wife took up her regular position as helper and I took up my position as manger and solicitor of free advice.
Yup, fan motor bearing gone south and of course your not going to find a Carrier model whatever replacement fan motor on a Sunday. BIL said he thinks the part is around $150 and will pick one up tomorrow and have me good to go before lunch time. I still can't believe I'm getting off that easy so all I can do is wait and see.
Before he left he sprayed the fan motor with WD 40. Said it was just a temporary fix that may not work, or may work for 5 minutes, 5 hours or 5 days. He turned it on and it's been humming like new. Just hope it lasts through the night.

Gun News & Laws / S&W brings back the Model 648 in .22 WMR
« on: August 14, 2019, 07:26:19 PM »
I have always liked the .22 Magnum round. Whats not to like (except the internal lock) about a 6 inch 8 shot stainless revolver. The previous discontinued Model 648 brings $1200 or more nowadays. Will be going to my LGS tomorrow to see if I can order one for half that or close to it.

Price drop at Academy from $11 to $8 for a box of 50. Walked in when they were just stacking the shelf. Bought four today probably get another two or three tomorrow. My CZ EVO Scorpion eats these up.

Last Saturday my wife went to wash her SUV at a local automated/self serve car wash. She left her phone with bank card on the hood and drove off when she was finished. About two miles down the road she realized what she had done and retraced her steps back to the car wash.
Security camera at the car wash shows the phone on the hood when she drove off. So she returns home extremely upset. Phone had an app that when remotely activated wiped it clean. Cancelled the bank card. Traced her route in my car but no luck.
This morning I received a phone call. The phone had been found. The person that found it works at A&M and was talking to a co-worker who realized she knew my wife when she worked there. They called H&R to get contact information and the person that answered the phone is my neighbor of 25 years. I mean what are the odds of all that? Thankful for honest people.

Off Topic Discussion (NON FIREARM RELATED) / Chili
« on: July 13, 2019, 05:32:12 PM »
My mother made chili with kidney beans and it was damn good. My wife makes a three bean chili which is also really good but the best chili I have ever had was 30 years ago in Grimes County at Sheriff B. Foster's annual law enforcement BBQ.
No beans. The guy that made it was serious about his chili. For the meat he raised and butchered a certain type of calf. To control the heat he raised his own Caspian peppers and the onions came from his garden. Was adamant about using a wooden paddle instead of stainless steel.
I was going to ask him about beans in chili but he was heeled with a .45 LC Colt Single Action Army revolver in a well worn cowboy holster and decided not to broach the subject.

Kidney disease that has been in partial remission the last few years reared it's head last week. Kind of knocked me down for a few days but after a new round of (expensive) meds and I'm feeling much better. Kidney function is at 30%, which is the best I can hope for, so no dialysis.
So I've been catching up on the threads here on TGF and will be responding appropriately.

Strolling along the creek bed about a 1/2 mile from the house.

The article is pretty lame until you get to Mayor Pete the homosexual from Indiana:

"Mayor Pete Buttigieg said his favorite trail snack is beef jerky — which supporters sometimes give him at events."

Ya know I wasn't going to go there but some sh** just writes itself.  :icon_wink:

Handguns and Revolvers / A rare find
« on: June 07, 2019, 05:59:51 PM »
Forgot to put up a photo when I bought this a couple of weeks ago. Model 57 N Frame S&W .41 Magnum. It's absolutely flawless. Just pristine. Not saying it's realrare but you just don't see them that much especially in this condition. Last time I saw one just like this was at a show two years ago. It had a $1500 price tag. I paid far less than that.
A little history from Wikipedia:
In the early 1960s, Elmer Keith, Bill Jordan, and Skeeter Skelton, all noted firearms authorities and authors, lobbied Remington Arms and Smith & Wesson to introduce a new .41 caliber police cartridge with the objective of filling a perceived ballistic performance gap between the .357 and .44 Magnums, thus creating a chambering which they believed would be the ultimate for law enforcement purposes.[1] In April 1964 Remington responded by introducing the .41 Magnum cartridge, and in concert, Smith & Wesson launched the Model 57 revolver chambered for the new ammunition.[1] Elmer Keith originally proposed the name ".41 Police" for the new cartridge, but Remington instead chose .41 Magnum, hoping to capitalize on the notoriety and popularity of its earlier Magnum offerings.[1]

Fully functional battery operated clock with hidden storage space

I have one on a table in the hallway by my front door. This photo shows my Ruger LCRx in .38 Sp +P and a 1,000Lum flashlight. I recently swapped the Ruger for a Glock Model 33 in .357 Sig.

From Fox news/Can't get the link to work.

"California State University's campus in Long Beach is ditching its longtime mascot amid accusations of racism and officially moving to pick either a new symbol or have no mascot at all.
The university ditched its "Prospector Pete" character in September after criticism that it was offensive to indigenous people"  :sick2:

I've been sitting here thinking of new mascot names:
The U. Cal Long Beach Gay Caballeros
The U. Cal Long Beach Fightin' Trannys

I've got a couple others but they are NSFW
