Title: The OFFICIAL Shotgun Thread!
Post by: tenring on July 30, 2012, 05:47:29 PM
NOTE from ADMIN  - Here's the official Shotgun Thread  :thumbsup1: - Admin - 7-30-12

-----------------------

Don't see an official thread, maybe Ship'll move this and make one?

Anyhoo, here's my latest lil project, got kinda bored with 18.5 and 20" barrels and such, nothing wrong with them at all and I have one already, but wanted something a little different and broader purposed, as in something to hunt with too (with the proper plug of course, unless the S hits the F in which case all bets are off).

Bought this nice used Remmy 870 with a 26" barrel , and the guy had already purchased a 5 round extension but not installed it, so I did the dimple surgery and now got 9+1 capacity, added a cheapy mag clamp mainly to get a forward attachment point for the sling, added the Talon swivels. Installed a Blackhawk stock and fore-end ($44.00 w/free shipping on Amazon, best price I have found), I also swapped out the front bead for a small Hi-Viz greenie-glowy.

Internally, I swapped out the plastic mag follower for an aluminum one, replaced the carrier dog follower spring with the heavy-duty version from the 1100, replaced the MIM extractor with the stronger forged steel one, and added a set of Mesa Tactical anti-walk trigger pins. Only thing left is an extended choke, don't like the "breacher" extension as it's too long, but may buy it and machine it back a bit, just looking to even out the barrel length with the magazine length for aesthetic reasons.

Cycling is a bit stiff, but very very positive and reliable, it's a beast fully loaded, real crowd-pleaser and serious zombie medicine. :thumbsup1:

I just picked up an old 1100 for just the same purpose ($225). Hunting/Home Defense. What is the purpose of the anti walk pins? Is pin walking out a common occurence?

Mossberg 500 that started life as a JIC pistol grip.

Now has:

ATI Talon furniture including tri-rail foregrip, adjustable/folding stock, and scorpion recoil reduction system. Stock mounted side saddle, with custom cheek rest setup.

Mossberg Breacher barrel, with Hi Vis Sight

barrel shroud

Surefire M951 weapon light

black sling

Pure overkill, I have never even heard of any kind of shotgun trigger pins walking, never happened to me, but for 11 bucks, i figured what the heck, cheap insurance for the possible zombieclypse, bonus: I now have spare parts, which is always a good idea.

Beason: that Mossy is killer! :th_thicon_idea:

How do you like that ATI stuff? I just ordered a side saddle for my Maverick which is just sawed off and has a pistol grip. Been thinking of going to either the ATI or Blackhawk grip/stock.

Title: Re: The OFFICIAL Shotgun Thread!
Post by: beason on July 31, 2012, 08:27:56 AM
I dont have a lot of trigger time on it, but it feels solid. The foregrip is nice. and the rails have metal inserts where they mount. The pistol grip part has a really nice smooshy backstrap. this is the scorpion recoil reduction part. The stock is solid. It comes with an adapter to get a couple of degrees angle on it which feels a lot better. The mounting took a little work. The bolt that holds it on was just a touch to long. It would hit the safety bar on the trigger. I put a washer under it, and then the hinge would bind when i tried to straiten it out. so i had to take the dremel and put a relief notch in the end of the hinge so it would clear the screw head.

I could have probably just sourced a shorter screw, but i was a man on a mission, and it was late... LOL

I would suggest going with a receiver mounted side saddle. The one on the stock is nice, but its hard to get to without lowering the gun/taking your eyes off the target. You also cant use the cheek rest with it on there, unless you do like i did and modify it to still work.

Well right now mine doesn't have a stock at all, so the side saddle I'm in for is receiver mounted.

My main hang up on the stock is I put a pistol grip on it for a reason, lol. I wish I had one to handle and see if I liked the adjustable stock or not. Next meet I'll probably ask Dom to play with his. Lol.

I like the feel of the pistol grip setup I have. You can't hip shoot it, but it's very controllable. I've cleared the house one night with it. Some stuff hanging from the ceiling in the garage let go in the middle of the night. Sounded just like someone coming through the back door. It was very manageable.

I've cleared my place with my shotty when I first got it and it had a stock. Horrible. Put the pistol grip on it and cut it down and it is MUCH more manageable.  It's rougher on the wrist or course, but is still easy to shoot accurately.

This piece intrigues me, all metal forend, you can bolt on rail sections on the sides, and I believe it has a permanent rail on the bottom, was thinking of trying it and using a Magpul AFG on it, has anyone tried an AFG on a shotgun forend?

i think you would be ok with a semi auto, but with a pump, you may have grip issues pushing the action back forward. I could be wrong though, ive never used a AFG, but just from looking at them, it seems they are made to pull, not push.

Whats the best range closest to i10/bltwy 8 to test different shotgun loads. Looking to see what kind of patterns we get out of my bros mossberg 500. Have some buck shot, various target loads(apartment hd) and even some rifled slugs if places allow that. I usually go to hotwells cause its cheap, but never paid attention if you can shoot shotgun at targets other than skeet.

Also, what loads have you guys been using for indoor security?

Title: Re: The OFFICIAL Shotgun Thread!

I like 000 which is more than enough for inside the house ranges with less chance of crossing the street and hitting a neighbor.
Title: The OFFICIAL Shotgun Thread!
Post by: Jeb_66 on August 03, 2012, 06:59:37 PM
00 isn't going through my brick wall and the neighbors. Lol.

Right?

Post by: Domineaux on August 03, 2012, 09:22:45 PM
Yeah if your house has brick exterior 00 should be ok. Mine does only in small areas and 00 would blow right through the thin wood siding covering the rest.

Mine's just the green remington stuff. I've been looking at those rounds with discs in them too. PDX or something. Anyone have experience with a few types, what seems to be the general consensus?

i read some of those home defense rounds actually didnt put out a too tight a pattern. All the walls at the place i live are thin, im not worried bout my neighbors, but more the people that live with me. For now, using 1 1/8oz 7.5 target shot for inside. If i had a house id probably have a light buck shot to help cover outside situations too.

Got my side saddle on.  Then I discovered I had mixed shells. Lol. I only 5 2 3/4 00 buck, and 5 3 000 buck. I need to go get some decent shells to keep in it.

I'm leaning towards getting the Knoxx stock. How do you like yours Dom?

I love mine, though if they ever make one as good at recoil reduction that looks like a normal stock, I would jump on it.

Here's mine. I get tired of all the black guns, so I gave it a flat green paint job. I was trying to find flat olive drab, but I don't work for the govt anymore  :P

I keep Hornady Home Defense rounds in the tube, and just incase those aren't enough-Zombie Rounds in the shell holder...which I know, are the exact same thing, but cost more. lol!  It's got a sling and a red dot sight for it and all that, but I kinda prefer it just like the way it is in the pic. I want to get an adjustable stock for it so I can use that red dot sight and try to get accurate at 100 yds with rifled slugs, but that'll come sometime in the spring. I've shot them with the standard stock, and I'm hitting berm within 6" of where I was aiming. I think I just need to get a stock that I can bring everything in nice and tight for more control so I can have that extra accuracy. I even got a tac-light mounted to it, but it makes the gun so front heavy, that it just all feels off. So soon, I'm going to experiment with the tac-light mount being on top of the main housing.

I like how the Hogue grip matches the Compstock.  If I get get a M500 then I'll probably go with that combo.  :th_thicon_idea:

Here's my Maverick 88 with the old recoil reducing pistol grip Knoxx (that I keep beside the bed) & an old Marlin Model 43 that I cut down.
A cool thing about the Model 43 ;)
It does take about a minute to screw the barrel on & load, but eventually I'll make it work real fast. The gun is from the 20s, so I only shoot low recoil ammo through it.

I picked up a beat up 12GA Remington 11-48 & a Stevens 16GA pump a while back, but don't have any pics of them.  I'll probably make the 11-48 a SBS eventually.

And here's my Chinese 12GA Coach gun that stays on the other side of the bed.

This is my second. I got my first in the late 80's and kicked myself for over a decade for selling it. Everything I saw after was well out of my price range until I ran across this one about 3 yrs ago. It was too good a deal to pass up. I paid more for the one I bought new back in the 80's, than this one.

It's weighs too much and is overly complicated, so it a lot like me.  :th_thicon_lol:

Nice! Not easy to find one for a decent (or even reasonable) price any more.

I've standardized our house guns on 20 Ga. My wife is on 5'2" and weighs about 115, and she has never much cared for 12ga even in the 2 3/4" varieties.

This has been her house gun for a decade or more (Mossberg 500 with 18" barrel):

I recently bought a new 20ga for me (not a huge fan of the muzzle device, but wanted the short barrel), although mine is drilled and tapped, I haven't decided if I will put an optic on board.

My latest.  Top is my Mossberg 835 that I just finished. Mossberg 835, ATI Talon Stock and forend with Scorpion recoil reduction system, ATI Halo heatshield, TacStar 6 round side saddle, swapped the barrel and magazine tube from the camo to the security model, and TLR 3.

Bottom is my Maverick 88.  It's just a cheap pistol grip, TacStar 6 round side saddle, and cut the barrel to 18.  It's my next project.

I don't have the $400+ to spend, but there is a strange, silly Zombified shotgun for sale at Academy that keeps calling to me whenever I see it. It'd make a good car gun

Got some more parts ordered for my Maverick.  I'll post it's new look once they all come in.  Think I'm going to order that Sightmark Green Dot that ZombieHunter has.  Looks sharp.   :rocknroll2:  As long as it holds up to the recoil...................

Anyone have the Tristar 12 Guage Semi-auto pump action TEC 12 shotgun?  I priced them at around $650 but the place I get my .22TCM ammo can give it o me for $499 out the door price.  The only dislike is it has 5 Rnds only.  I would like a 9 rounder like the Mossberg 590.  Are semi-auto's not allowed to have hi capacity?

I saw some cool FN shotguns today at a newer, local gun store. Don't wanna go down that road :p

Plus with arthritis in the neck, shotguns don't interest me much....

Bud's has the TEC12 for $425, you can use the extension tube for a Benelli shotgun to add capacity. You might have to flatten out or grind off the crimp at the end of the TEC12 mag tube.

I'm interested in a camo pattern for my UTS15.  Here are some I have looked at.  I use it for home defense, for which its current black color is fine, but I would also like a camo pattern for turkey or duck hunting.  Anyone have a prefence on any of the images below?  Any suggestions for another pattern?  I do these in photoshop.

The grip is cut down from a wooden VEPR rifle stock. It has a Burris FastFire2 on it & a surplus Russian sling. The 8rd steel mag is from csspecs.

To All,

Imo, a person could do FAR worse than a Turkish-made pump riot-gun by ASI. = I bought mine "more or less by  accident" at a San Antonio gun-show last year, while looking for a used Model 870 Remington (or something similar) for a "house defense gun".

A fellow quietly said to me, while I was looking at a "pretty junky looking" 870 that, "a fellow on the back row has NEW shotguns for the same price", so I walked back to the back & ended up buying a ASI 12-gauge pump for 200.oo OTD.

It's a NICE gun for the few dollars & is at least equal in overall quality to a Mossberg or one of the new Model 870 shotguns.
(I'm NOT impressed with the new Remington products. = My old 870 pump-gun from the 1980s was better in every way.)

My "cheap little gun" is NICE, well-machined, has a hard industrial chromed bore & shoots every time W/O problems, with any 12 gauge load that I've tried.

just my OPINION, satx

If your 870 is from the 80' most  likely it is a wing master, rather than an express that most sold in the $250  - $350 range now are.  Much better quality in the wingmaster, but express is still very good gun.  Carried this gun for 40 years.  NEVER A failure to fire.   Reason that the military still uses the 870!   I have 870's in 16 and 12, from 1960's until now.  Still love my 1100 for field shoots, but 870 wing master is totally reliable.  With an 18" barrel, best home defense firearm you can own, in my somewhat humble view.  (note I also have mossberg pumps and stevens doubles that work fine as well.  Keep your 870, add the short barrel and load up OO buck and you are best you can be.)  TEXKAN

I purchased a few guns from an estate
1 is bridge guns co double barrel it has some marks or symbols under the barrels on the receiver with the serial # 51xx. Between the barrels there is a name laminated figure Belgium. Does anybody know anything about this gun? I have looked at different forums looking up bridge guns co that it may have been made by crescent but it also said that if it had trade marks it could be made in Europe.

TEXKAN,

YEP. The current 870 is a Wingmaster that belonged to my late Uncle. - I've never/won't cut it down, as it's a 28 inch with VR & a family heirloom.

Otoh, it's too long & ungainly for easy use as a "truck gun", thus the Turkish pump-gun.

yours, satx

Hope it's OK to bump these old topics since they're stickies.

Wingmaster 870 in 20ga I inherited from my Grandfather.  He received this from his crew as a County Foreman retirement gift from the Texas Highway Department somewhere around 1976 I believe.
