Any baseball fans in the house?

I usually go see a few games a season. My father is a baseball nut. He is older, though, and doesn't know his way around Houston. So, I take him to a couple of Astros games a year.

Admittedly, I have been bored by the 5th inning lately... Not nearly as exciting as hockey.

When I lived in North Arlington in 03/04, I was like 5 minutes away from the Rangers stadium. We saw a lot of Rangers games while living there. It was so easy to get out and be home in under 10 minutes... Not like the old days of the Astrodome - where you left before the game was over so you could get out :)

Huge card's fan here.  I am sad to see the astro's leave the NL b/c I will miss the card's coming down here a couple times a year.  Although after 2013 when they move to the AL, I can become a astro's fan.

Not sure who the astros are going to trade all the talent to now when we leave the NL.     Think the DH in our park can make for some great games.

Oh lord, I went to some many Astros games at the Dome that I can't make myself go to anymore baseball games.  I still watch a few games on TV and never miss the World Series.  For some reason watching baseball now relaxes me and makes me think about all the games I went to with my dad.  (Even though I would get bored early on as a kid and eventually hated going to the games).  Funny how something I disliked then I kinda miss now.

And actually writing that out made me realize I am going to have to get some dang tickets to the dang games and take my old man and my kids.  Lol.

There ya go Jeb, create some new memories. Your kids will love it (nothing like a kids first big league ball game) and your dad will surely cherish the return to the days of seeing a game with his son (and maybe more so since it's on your dime now lol).

I rarely go to the games I will watch the playoffs and the world series if there is a team I have a little interest in.  I know it is not MLB but hopefully I will go see some of those skeeters games in sugarland.

I am going to make the trek down there this year and catch at least one game.

The Astros have a chance to do something no team has ever done in MLB history this year and next......win the World Series as a NL team one year and then as an AL team the next year!

While I don't think that's going to happen, I follow the Astros and always look forward to Baseball season. The new ownership seems to be intent on building the team from an in house foundation. They look to be stocking the minor league teams and getting some young talent. I just wish they could get rid of Carlos Lee. He's not much of an outfielder any more and is at best a mediocre 1st baseman. He might be OK as the DH when we're  forced into the American league.

Looking forward to the Skeeters minor league ball too. I used to a lot of Rancho Cucamonga Quake games when I lived in California. I also go to Round Rock Express games when I visit friends in Fredericksburg.

I hope they do a name and uniform change when they make the switch to the AL.  The Astro's was a NL team, and once they make the move, they should start fresh with everything.

Yes the Colt 45's would be cool. it will never happen to non PC. maybe they could change the name back to the Buffaloes. I think the changing of the uniforms every couple of years is just so people buy more merchandise.

That is not their game plan right now.  They are going to develop the farm system first to get younger talent on the field.  If they can trade Wandy, Carlos and Brett for younger talent they will do that.  I realistically don't expect anything from them until they move to the AL, and it will probably be a couple years after that when they start winning.

As a Card's fan, I am not sure why they want him.  He doesn't want to be in the bullpin and that's where he would likely end up.

I expect the Astros to be at or near the bottom for the next 2 to 3 years while they rebuild the farm system. After that I hope to see them make a run in the AL West. I'd prefer the NL, but it wasn't up to me.

They had something similar a couple months ago, where you got to tour the dugout, batting cages, locker room and other things for a $10 entry fee.  It was awesome.  I will more than likely go to this one as well.  I do have to wait until 2013 to become a Astro's' fan when they move to the AL.

Its a long shot but I thought I'd toss this out there.  Does anyone here have advice on watching MLB Ticket if they have AT&T Uverse?   Problem is that ATT doesn't carry it.  I've seen suggestions of buying an MLB.TV subscription and using a ROKU box to stream games.

Astros management had nothing to do with it. It was the miserable SOB Bud Seileg. The same prick that forced the Astros into the American League instead of moving his F---ing Brewers back to the AL.

I detest Bud Seileg as much as the designated hitter rule.

The Colt .45 will be shown on the throwback uniform after all. MLB decided they should stay out of it and left it up to the Astros front office. Of course the Astros decided to include the Colt .45 on the uniform.

Thank God the public outcry was sufficient to tell MLB to f off and the Astros to go with the original design.
Now I'll buy one for a cover garment for my 1911 and nothing else would have ever made me want a baseball jersey.

Saw they allowed them to use the gun last night.    I will be adding a new jersey when they release them.    Like dom said cover garment.  Jerseys work great when go OWB,  but they are heavy and suck in our summer heat.

You have to feel for the plight of the marketing department of each MLB team.  Each year they are tasked to come up with dozens of promotional giveaways to lure fans to come out to the ballpark.  Some of these ideas are great, but some of them... not so much.  We could spend time admiring the good ideas, but where is the fun in that?  Instead, let's reward these marketing department staffers for all their hard work by ridiculing their most ill-conceived ideas.

The following is a list of the worst giveaway for each team, and yes, these are all real promotional giveaways and events (though the descriptions might include some "artistic license).

Quote
Houston Astros - Replica Colt .45s jersey.  Gun not included in the logo therefore FAIL.

Awesome!
These are my favorites (in addition to the obvious favorite Astros mentioned already):

Quote
Chicago White Sox - Robin Venture bobblehead.  I will fly to Chicago for this game if someone can promise me that it comes with a Nolan Ryan bobble head that puts Ventura in a headlock and pummels it.

Quote
Los Angeles Angels - Cowboy hats.  This might be the worst one of all and not just because Southern California fans aren't exactly clamoring for cowboy hats.  The problem is that the Angels are playing the Rangers in this game.  The Texas Rangers, from the state of Texas, where they actually wear cowboy hats.  Brilliant move Angels marketing department, way to make your division rival feel at home when playing in your stadium.

Quote
New York Mets - Texting gloves.  OMG these gloves are so lame LOL.  Still cant believe I paid to see the Mets WTF!!!

I like the trade the Astros made. Got rid of two back ups that wouldn't see much playing time on the big league team and added a lefty to the bullpen. The player to be named later will be another youngster that their farm system desperately needs.

And he is now, once again, a baseball pitcher. In related news, he is also a Skeeter.

Clemens is expected to make his first start for his new team, the Sugar Land (Texas) Skeeters of the independent Atlantic League, on Saturday night.

I would love to see the circus that will happen there when he pitches.  For those that have not gone to a game, they have a really nice stadium.

Season nearly over.  This was a GREAT baseball season.

I was originally a N.Y.Giant fan.  HATED The Brooklyn Dodgers.  I was both twelve and in heaven in 1951.  Bobby Thompson hit "the shot heard round the world" and propelled my Giants into the world Series.  We won it ALL in 1954, beating a hugely favored Indian's team.

Then both Giants and dodgers went west.  I was crushed.

Mets came to be in 1962.  Tried to be a Met fan, just not into it.  Anyway, they tried to claim some sort of kinship to The Dodgers  --  made it nearly impossible.

For a fairly long time, baseball was just a game I liked.  Watched the Atlanta Braves a lot (on TBS), tried to follow The San Francisco Giants  --  not the same thing.

Then, I made the leap to The New York Yankees.  A lot had to do with the amazing team they had.  Wade Boggs, in particular, rekindled my interest.  He was magical  --  work the count, get the hit - or get on base however.  an artist.

The rest of the team wasn't exactly chopped liver either.

I'm still a Yankee fan, to this day.  Have gone to quite a few Ranger games.  Good team.  Very good team.  Still  --  not quite MY tesm.

Perhaps the fact they hated A-Rod really upset me.  MVP after MVP - and still, everything he did here was "wrong".

Now, he has proven he's a "stand up guy".  doesn't duck the questions.  Takes responsibility.  Playing with Jeter hasn't hurt him in any way  --  might have made him a better person.

Looking forward to the last two games and the post season.  Don't know if either Yankees or Rangers will get too far.  Strong competition.

In many ways, I'm looking forward to the off season  --  wonder who goes where.  I suspect there will be a lot of player movement.

Really haven't made any Series picks yet.  Anyone want to start, or should we wait to see the initial  matchups.

Very happy Angels not in playoffs this year.  They can be VERY dangerous in a short series.

As far as Pujols goes  --  it's not his fault some fool gave him that long term contract.  Now, he, and his family, SHOULD be set for life+.

He went with the almighty dollar, and the angels will get an aging player with a massive contract that may or may not affect them down the road.  I am just happy the Cards are not on the hook for that contract.  I wish he would've stayed in St. Louis for a 5 or 6 year deal that they offered him, but I wouldn't have gone 10 years like the angels did.

I actually agree with the uniform change.  They are no longer a NL team, and need a new look for the move to the AL.  The Astro's won't be spending any money on players right now.  They are hoping to build from within the organization with prospects and drafts choices.  If you are expecting a good team in the next couple of years, you will be disappointed.

Now it's all over.  The S.F. Giants won it all (perhaps I should have put ALL in ALL CAPS - but, I'll pick another random word).

As improbable as is possible, "Panda" hits 3HR in game 1 of the series, Scutaro MVP (or is that mvp?) of NLCS.

Suddenly S.F. Giants are a new "dynasty"  --  win 2 in 3 years  --  with a team that scares no one, especially when Posey is shut down.

Now it's free agents, qualifying offers, player movements, etc.

I will only make a prediction for the N.Y.Yankees  --  A-Rod stays, Swisher goes, Raul I. stays, Chavez is another late signing, Ichiro is signed to a one year contract, Nunez still can't quite catch the ball  --  but he is getting "better".  Jeter makes an amazing recovery, Mo comes back but is not as effective, Pineda returns, good for about 1/2 season - then he sucks, Hughes does not regain form, etc., etc.   --  Yankees make playoffs, ousted in first round, Girardi fired.

Other than the 1 retro Astros one I have (which I like, as it is a little longer than most jerseys that size) - I ONLY buy them with names.

Yes, people leave... But, if I like that player enough to buy it - I don't care. I'll still wear it to the games... I do that with my hockey jerseys. Jagr is my favorte player - he left Philly, and is on the Stars for 1 year (if there is ever a season). I did buy a Dallas Stars jersey with his name on it a few months back. What will REALLY suck is if there is no season, and his 1 year contract expires... And they don't resign him. Then, I'll have a jersey for someone who never played on the team  :th_thicon_lol:

OK Baseball fans who has one of these? When my wife worked in the president's office at A&M she was asked to help Alvin Community College with a program they were starting. A few weeks later she got this Nolan Ryan autographed baseball in the mail.

Love baseball. Do my chores around the house during the week to free up time to watch, depending on the season, baseball or college football on weekend afternoons.

Love apple pie

Not a fan of pick up trucks as a daily driver although I understand their appeal. Borrow my brother in laws if I need to carry something that won't fit in my wife's SUV.

Truth of the matter is, baseball is the only sport I will watch or listen anymore. I use to be a huge fan of NASCAR racing, but when Dale Sr. died, I quit watching racing pretty much. I lost interest in it. I'll watch an occasional Indy 500 if I get the chance, but that's about it anymore. Wasn't really a huge football or basketball fan either, and I gave up watching football over twenty five years ago. I mainly watched football because I gambled on the games. Didn't even really care who won the game, as long as I was winning money off the games!

But baseball? My father and grandfather always had a radio on when baseball was one. They very seldom watched a game, but they loved listening to them on the radio. So during the spring and summer, there was usually some baseball game on the radio that was being listened to.

So for me, in many ways, baseball just hasn't seemed to have changed as much as other sports. I guess that's why I still love the game of baseball. It still takes me back to being younger and more innocent, before life got all complicated from being an adult.

If MLB has approved a new "aerodynamic" baseball I believe they had an obligation to fans and players to be up front about it. I can see why Verlander would be mad about this. For pitchers their statistics, earned run average, hits, walks, home runs given, etc. are what pays the bills when negotiating contracts. Having your stats take a nose dive because of a juiced ball ain't right.
I love baseball and catch four or five games a week. Besides the world series the all star game tonight is a big deal for Major League Baseball. With Verlander the starting pitcher for the American League it will be interesting to see if the subject about juiced baseball comes up. Don't see how they can ignore it.

For some reason Dish blacks out all Ranger and Astros games. Sometimes the local Fox affiliate will carry one or the other on the weekend but not often. I've been a Yankees fan since 1960. The Major League Baseball channel usually caries the Yankees or one of the rivalry games on the weekend so I get my fix.
Astro's are a good team (again) this year. My prediction, and you heard it hear first, is the Astros or Yankees vs. the LA Dodgers in the series this year.

Title: Re: The OFFICIAL Major League Baseball thread!

I see a  lot of astro batters been getting beaned lately.  :th_KO:

Cheating is cheating. What can you really say about it. I think what had everyone so pissed was the commission did ABSOLUTELY  NOTHING to the players for KNOWINGLY PARTICIPATING and using it. Citing the contracts supposedly say the players cannot be held accountable for their OWN actions..

But then they turn around and threaten the other teams and other teams players  with MAJOR penaltys IF they do Any reprisals.

That's just plain bullsheet imo.

They got players that set records using steroids, loaded bats, etc, ,,,  but wont remove that record , why? Their skin color?

The professional sports governing bodies  have been pretty subjective and biased in handing out punishment to cheaters.

And REALLY GOOD  At covering things up and keeping cheating quiet..

Probably a pretty touchy subject on any forum.  :th_thicon_funny:

Baseball season.
Good I have not been sleeping well lately need something BORING on TV to lull me night night.

Astros and other team(s) that were found to have cheated and won should IMO be stripped of titles and championship given to team that lost in series or vacated for that season.

Cheaters suck no matter what sport or thing in life they are cheating at.

Cheating is wrong. It hurts the entire sport. IMO, turning a blind eye, is the same as saying that cheating is acceptable.

It casts a black stain on everyone involved, no matter how small their part was in the cheating.

Remember the scandal of the 1919 World Series.
Title: Re: The OFFICIAL Major League Baseball thread!
Post by: Alte Schule on March 03, 2020, 04:23:47 PM
I love baseball. Always have. The cheating scandal with the Astros left me kind of amazed that in this day and age that they went to such lengths to steal pitching signs and thought they could get away with it. If you steal something and somebody else knows about it then, sooner or later, everyone knows. BB players are routinely trade to other teams, given their outright release, have arguments with management, etc. It was just a matter of time before someone snitched. I'm surprised it took so long.
What really gets to me is they didn't need to cheat. They had great pitching talent and a way better than average offense with an all star defense. Hell they won half of their away games in stadiums where they couldn't cheat.
Getting rid of the management was a good step but they need to be stripped of their World Series title.

Surprised,, and honestly, DELIGHTED,  forum members take such a hard line on cheating.

ANY player, in ANY sport, that wins championships and sets records by cheating, should be stripped of the title, or record.

I don't mean this to sound rude or judgmental because I agree with you all to an extent, BUT.................. It's amazing to me how much y'all are willing to allow BLM to take control of your lives.

SIXTY YEARS of being a die-hard baseball fan -- literally a major aspect of your entire lifestyle -- gone up in flames because some guys wore T-shirts you didn't like to an event you did? That's blowing my mind.

I really do agree with you that the players would be better off keeping politics out of the game and I definitely understand not wanting to financially contribute to something you don't agree with (both reasons being a part of why I don't like sports), but at the same time, what about the players who don't have their heads up their asses? Couldn't you pick and support a different team, maybe one that's good at beating the team you've chosen to drop?

Eventually you guys are all gonna run out of interests to have if you choose to abandon football, basketball, baseball, NASCAR, and everything else. Then you're basically going to be handing each of those sports over to BLM to use as platforms, because if everyone who disagrees with BLM leaves, won't that basically just be handing these areas of interest over to the people who DO like to eat out of their hand?

I understand what you are saying, and if it were just a few that were waving the flag for the BLM supporters, then I could probably just move on and keep watching MLB. But this is entire teams showing support. Several from what I understand.

So no, I can't abide such decisions to support something I am fully against, and I know is built upon a false narrative and is essentially funneling money into the Democrats, who are for all intents, trying to destroy our country. The BLM is nothing more than a political and subversive organization intent on bringing this country to it's knees.

I will surely miss baseball, and it saddens me greatly. But no, I won't show any support in any way. Maybe, they will come to their senses. It's suppose to be about a game and entertainment, not politics.

Being the son of a career Army officer I learned early to respect the American flag. Serving this country myself for ten years solidified that fact. Seeing professional sports players turn their back on the American flag and kneel during the nation anthem disrespects me, the majority of fans and Americans in general.
Professional sports players have reaped the great bounties this country provided them and this is how they pays it back. Players like Drew Brees, who I thought was a true American besides being a great player, will now be remembered as one of the professionals who, after offering respect for the flag, refused to stand up for himself and showed his true colors and fell in line like the rest of the cowardly bas******s least he be accused to not being sympathetic to “the cause” or a racist. Professional sports needs fans and the money they provide. Screw ‘em I’m done.
Let’s see what college sports has to offer. I prefer college ball anyway. Go AG’s.

Go AG’s.

Amen Alte, Amen!  :salute:

They are as bad or worse in the disrespect America arena.

That is OK no need to sit on my arse and watch others play games.

I hot plenty of things to do that are much more beneficial to me anyway.
