Title: Off the Cuff Random Stuff, That Just Doesn't Fit Anywhere Else!
Post by: Axxe55 on April 28, 2020, 08:38:40 PM
So how about a thread, just to post random stuff, that doesn't really fit in one specific area, or might just gain a few replies and not necessarily need it's own thread. Or just witty banter about various things. Or random questions about anything that might be perplexing you.

Well Im headed out to my property again this afternoon.
Finish up clearing around another big oak thats hidden by endless amounts of scrub brush briars and hackberries.

Slowly getting things cleaned up and how I want it to be.

Should be a nice warm rain free weekend

Well beer thirty just arrived!  :rocknroll2:

So I'm pretty much done for the day, sitting back relaxing and cooling off with a cold beer that just arrived. Looking forward to a good dinner, and sitting back and taking it easy the rest of the evening.

Life is good!  :rocknroll2:

Ain't it funny, how we really miss something when someone takes it away from us?

72 and sunshine in northern PA yesterday.

Got on the kubota and mowed all the thicker stuff.
Had a bad deal today.  A cat we've had since birth in 2004 passed. I never wanted a cat. But this snow white kitten was so tiny she didnt know how to eat. Her eyes were barely open.
My wife's friend found her alone in the woods. Animals often push snow white babies out of the litter.

My wife worked that same weekend,  so I had to bottle feed the kitten. Oddly enough,, this cat ended up only liking me. She wouldnt let anybody else but the wife  even   touch her. I used to joke she was an albino mountain lion. Cause she acted like it.

But our somewhat cantankerous dispositions kinds matched.  Maybe that's why she took to me.  :thinker:
So today I had to dig a hole. She was a good cat. Went fairly quiet. I think her organs just shut down.
The wife said she had a long and good life.  :wave1:

When my neighbors down the road moved they left the Burmese cat they had. Knew them about twenty years and never figured they were the type to abandon a pet. It took about a week before the cat came around. He just wanted a scratch but we began feeding it so it's been hanging around for the last seven years. I would guess he is around 17. The people that bought his old house also feed him but they must use generic as he leaves his pay in dead field mice and snakes on my porch.

When my Shepard was about ten months old he bolted out the door after the Burmese and had his ass handed to him. That cat was a seasoned street fighter and the rookie was no match. He could without a doubt light that cat up now but he keeps his distance. After five years the memory of that whoopin' is still fresh.

16 years is a long time for a cat. Especially so if it was an outdoor cat. I keep thinking that the Burmese won't survive the winter but we haven't had a serious winter in several years.

A few years ago I received a Kindle for Christmas. In two years I read close to 100 books all ordered off my wife's Amazon Prime account. Most books were $2-$3 but new additions to a popular series were $5 or more. It added up to about $400. Put the brakes on it then.

Wednesday evening my brother brought me some replacement batteries for my golf cart that he took in as trade when one of his customers bought a new set for his golf cart. These are only about 20 months old, and will replace the 11 year old batteries that are in it now. Four to six years is about the average on golf cart batteries. So we got the money's worth out these!

I spent about four and half hours that night taking out the old ones, then cleaning, scraping and washing the entire battery compartmet of dirt and acid corrosion build-up, then making some new battery holders out of angle iron. Got all that done then got them hooked up to the charger to charge overnight. Next morning, went to use the golf cart and the danged micro-switch started smoking and shorting out! Went to the salvage area on the other side of the property and found a good used one off another old golf cart, got it replaced, along with some other minor wiring that got a little too warm. Then spent most of the rest of the day chasing a non-existent problem because I wasn't paying attention and wore out. Had gotten everything back together, and everything worked, except the drive motor. To access the micro-switch, I had to remove the charger port, and to get to one of it's screws, I moved the direction controller switch to "N" instead of "F" or "R". So in "N" the motor isn't going to turn! Duh on me! So I chased down a problem that wasn't there for about four hours.

Roofer didn't show again yesterday, so about 5pm the wife and I headed to Lowes to pick up the rest of the supplies for the roof.

Then we stopped off at the Dollar General for a few things, called in a to-go order at Fox's Pizza Den for a couple of Wedgie sandwiches for dinner, and eased back, ate dinner and watched Urban Cowboy on NetFlix. I think I fell asleep about midnight last night. Last few days have been really rough on my old body!

Every so often, I will reread some of my books. I have quite a few that are entire series written by the same author, and will start with the earliest and read them to the newest edition. AS that I have several of those, I figure its a good way to recycle my books!

3 people in the store.

Totally stocked with everything but chicken.

Was only after milk n bread. But decided just go ahead a get a cart full.
Got everything I went after, and then some.

COOL. Be good for a few weeks now.  :rocknroll2:

Went to Olive Garden for takeout. Coming back we drove by a large sign that said ďDine InĒ at

Other than the 1 car (I assume was the managerís) in the lot, the lot and building was empty.

Dude... Waffle House.... Chicken & Waffles... one car in the parking lot....probably could have had an all you can eat plate ...a stoners dream.  :rocknroll2: Olive Garden pales in comparison.

Seriously a few years ago I picked up a friend at George Bush International. He talked me into stopping at a Waffle House at 4AM  for chicken and waffles which sounded ghetto to me. Not ashamed to admit I took a to go box home.

A&M students had a petition going around a couple of years ago to urge Waffle House to build a restaurant here. Seems A&M is the only school in the Southeast Conference, SEC, without a local Waffle House. Still waiting.

When I lived in Houston, close to Memorial City Mall right off Interstate 10 and Gessner Drive, was a place called Champ's, that we would hit after the bars closed. They had the LARGEST breakfast buffets I had ever seen. And the food was pretty danged good too.

Closest Waffle House to us is over in Corsicana. Ate breakfast there many a morning when I was working out of Corsicana for the railroad.

This afternoon, another trip to Lowes! More materials. Should get the shingles done this afternoon too. I REALLY hate roofing!

Another trip to Lowes for more materials. Then I went to Tractor Supply Company and bought a new Porter Cable 20V, four tool combo, with a 1/2" drill, recipricating saw, 5 1/2" circular saw, light, two batteries and a charger, on sale for $179. Then back to the house to get back on drywall repairs.

I don't miss much about Houston, like all the people, or the traffic, or traffic jams, or the crime, but one thing I do miss about living in Houston are the restaurants. Lots and lots of great places to go out to eat, and lots of choices. Whatever your taste-buds desired, they probably had it.

Speaking of AC filters I invested in one of K&Ns reusable household filters.
I have ran K&N air filters on many cars over the yrs. My Mustang is still on the one I installed 16yrs ago when I bought it new. Remove and wash/oil it as needed. Same for their house units. Installed in 9/19 so far cleaned it 12/19 03/20. Wash it out let it dry reinstall it.If it lasts (which I dont doubt it will) I should get many yrs of service from it for $49.95. I live in a fairly dusty area as I have a cement plant less than a mile away and well it is S Central TX as well.

I tried some of the expensive filters in years past. But, they were TOO thick and whistled. Made the unit work harder too.

When I got my last house (before my exwife got it), I talked to the people who installed the a/c. They told me to just use regular filters (not super cheap, but regular ones). He said all these HEPA rated ones and allergy specific ones make the a/c strain too hard to get air in.

So, that's what I have done. I just change them often.

It sucks when I walk around the backyard and my sinuses run wild the next day because there are 6 large Junipers there.
Would someone please come to Plano and cut them down without my knowledge, then I don't have to deal with the HOA :)

When they die off, the HOA will MAKE you cut them down!  :rocknroll2:

It looks like a barrel in a wood stock.
A Thompson maybe?

Dunno. Cant imagine what it might be.
But it sure looks like a rifle or carbine of some sort. But there it no front sight on it, IF it is.

The other day, Susie, being the puppy she is, decided to chew up the Roku remote! I scolded, and whooped her butt for that one.

So great!  :bangheadonwall:

How to operate the Roku? Did an internet search starting with buying a new remote. But ran across a question if a smart phone could be used for a remote. Sure nuf! Just download the Roku app to your phone and it has the remote right there. Works like a champ. Downloaded it on the wife's phone as well.

Started off this morning clearing some small trees off the front fence line. Got the weedeater out to clear the weeds along the fence line where I was working, and notice after the weeds were cleared there looked to be a damp spot on the ground close to the fence. Hmmm...I says! The more I walked on it, the soggier it got. Water leak!  :scream3:

Well dug it up and sure enough a small leak. Just got it fixed and since it was pretty close to where I wanted another faucet along the front fence, I went ahead and added that while I had the water shut off and was doing the leak repair.  :wave1:

Just finished up and I should be able to turn the water back on in about another thirty minutes.  :rocknroll2:

So how's everyone else doing today?  :wave1:

Good news and bad news yesterday. Good news, I did get the water leak fixed and all is okay. Band news, I think the electric motor on my golf cart crapped out on me yesterday.

Got the motor pulled off earlier today, and will tear into it tomorrow to see how bad it is. Might have another one on one of the old scrapped golf carts.

Well I got the electric motor off and disassembled, and one of the power lead lugs was melted off. I sort of suspected that when there was looseness in the cable when I removed it. Confirmed when I got it tore apart though. Explains why it stopped moving!

Studied and looked it over for a couple of days to figure out how to repair it. Found a simple solution. Crimped a heavy duty ring terminal to the end of it and used a new bolt with the existing insulator washers, and new nuts. Got it reassembled and installed back on the golf cart. It works!  :th_thicon_idea:

Now I have to get back to my mowing, again! And weedeating.  :wave1:

I picked up an old 2hp electric motor from over at my father's barn the other day. Got it cleaned up and wired up a power cord and it works great.

Going to use it to build a 2x72 belt sander. Got another electric motor that I plan on using for building a band saw.

Scrounged myself 26 8ft oak 2x4 last night for FREE.

An AC duct fab company down the street from my office always has big ol ugly shipping crates basically pallets and the 2x4s nailed together. They said take all you want when you want so I have started collecting some.

Store out on the land for future who knows what. I cant pass an opportunity for free materials when I have storage space for it.

Some of those pallets are made with some really good wood. They are already for the most part pretty well seasoned, and you can make some really cool stuff with the wood.

Those cheap pallets are what I liked to use for target holders at the house. When they ended up shot up enough to no longer be useful, I'd throw them on the brush pile.

Yes these pallets were solid oak nice wide straight slats.
I only gathered 2x4s I can get pallets at my office and I have like 25 in a pile on land.

Earlier this month I tested positive for COVID-19. Yesterday I tested negative, so the doctor said it's back to business as usual for me.

I hope I don't catch it a second time; I've heard it said that catching it again is far more likely to be a death sentence than just catching it once -- something about your body can't or won't mount as strong an immune response the second time around because of the way the virus behaves.

It's been one hell of a crazy year so far.

31 fairly decent free 2x4s and a sheet n 1/2 of osb.

There is an A/C duct mfg co close to my office. Was told to take all you want just dont leave a mess. So I obliged them the other day.
Scored this and cleaned all the nails out today.

I will be gathering all I can for future use on the Donderosa.

Free is the best lumber price I know.

Thank you all for the kind words; they mean a lot.

Fortunately for me, the worst of the symptoms were over in about a week. Even then, sometimes I didn't feel sick at all; other times, I did feel sick, but not as sick as I've gotten in the past from regular colds and flu's I've caught before. The dry cough which was the only persistent symptom, and at times it could get annoying... One morning, I thought I might wind up with washboard abs that night from the repeated muscle contractions caused by coughing so much.

Overall, the way the sickness behaved itself was almost surreal; it was as if the virus was giving me my symptoms in allotments. One day, I'd experience two or three 5-minute bouts of shortness of breath, and some full body fatigue. The next, a very light hangover-style headache that mostly just made the back of my eyes hurt, and some of the abdominal pain (caused by the coughing, which was particularly bad that morning). The day after, one or two bouts of nausea, and some heaviness in the chest. The next day, a ration of fever and chills, in 1-2 hour increments. On the final day, one more more 5-minute bout of shortness of breath, coupled with joint aches (in only my right knee of all things), and some general fatigue.

One thing that struck me as odd was that seemingly nothing ever came of the supposed contact tracing we're budgeting so much government funding towards. Because of the obvious risk of exposure, I didn't seriously expect them to send anybody to my house to conduct an in-person interview as they apparently tried to do in New York -- that would be stupid and needlessly dangerous for all involved. However, nobody at the clinic where I tested positive said anything to me about any procedures for following up with the CDC, the state, or even the metro health department. That I'm aware of, I still haven't received any letters in the mail, calls, texts, voicemails, or emails with links to some place I could respond electronically either, like we did with the Census.

I'd read that the city had experienced some problems with people ignoring them due to their phone numbers looking like spam-bot calls (which I do get tons of), but, I'd ALSO heard they had gotten their call center's phone number changed so that it said "SA Metro Health Department" on incoming caller ID specifically to combat that problem. I watched and waited, and nothing.

We'll see what happens moving forward; the wheels of Government bureaucracy turn slow -- maybe I might wake up three years from now and find a sign staked in my front yard saying 'DANGER, KEEP AWAY - RESIDENT HAS TESTED POSITIVE FOR COVID-19!!!'

As far as your not being contacted etc.
Makes one seriously wonder about all the statistics every night and day on the local news here in SA.

Also was reading news about these so called protesters in iorc Portland.
Story stated ďthousands of protesters stood shoulder to shoulder shouting and chantingĒ. Sure am glad CV19 is respectful of peoples right to protest.
Too bad its not the same for church school bars must be it only respects BLM supporters.

Hmmmmm

Ahaaaaaaaa, Gilgondorin wins.

So I first tested positive like 2 weeks ago, and I just barely got a call from somebody with the Metro Health District a few minutes ago in regards to the contact tracing thing I mentioned never having gotten until now.

No, he said he didn't know specifically why nobody's called me except for weeks after the fact. He mentioned the testing authority I went to may have just barely delivered a backlog of case results to them this morning.

With that level of ground-up (dis)organization going on, it's no wonder nobody has much of an idea of what's really happening. :th_thicon_lol:

Well it turns out, I did have a small water leak on the water line to the house. Luckily it was in sandy soil and not a lot of roots to chop through so it didn't take too long to locate the leak. While I was doing the repair, O went ahead and added a faucet there, and raised another one since the water was shut off.

Repairs seem to be working, and I'm pretty much done for the day now! Cheers to all!  :rocknroll2:

Well, I have one little leak, or dribble on the new faucet! Put pipe dope on the threads before attaching the faucet, and it's dribbling water. Can't find one single roll of pipe tape at all. I know if I go buy a roll, that all of  a sudden those missing rolls will appear!  :bangheadonwall:

I have the same thing with vise grips. Can never find one when I need it. I must have four now. Also kind of like changing a headlight. Might as well replace both at the same time as the other will go out in a week or two. Thatís on pre 2000 vehicles. Wouldnít touch one now. At least on the vehicles I have.

Most now can be removed with a twist of the socket retainer after removal of the connection. Now access to and removal of the connection can be a PIA but the lamp come right out.
Also the lamps last longer the more ya handle um.

The Genesis dealer wants $500 just for the halogen bulb. WTF!!!!! To replace the bulb you have to take the partially dismantle the bumper. To remove the oil pan you need a special tool to remove the protective brace from the pan.

Inventive ways to squeeze your nads for that extra buck.

Late last week, our internet went out after it started raining. Never came back up. Called the internet people and they sent out a tech today to look it over. Took him about 15 minutes to fix the problem.

Over time they can get a little out of adjustment from settling, or heavy wind or rains. So he realigned the dish for us, and he even showed me how to use my laptop, or smart phone to do the next one myself and save us the call of calling out a service tech.

pretty cool guy.

Unfortunately, things are going less well on the Gondorin front.

Came down with an increasingly painful tooth ache on Friday. By Saturday morning I was in agony; my hands and were shaking, and I kept passing in and out o7f sleep every hour because of colossal pounding temple migraine I had.

Ended up going to a Texas Med on Saturday evening to get antibiotics and pain killers because I finally couldn't stand it anymore; even then, they didn't do much to help the first night.

I ended up having to look around and see if I could find an emergency dentist to hurry up and get the wisdom tooth removed that was causing me all the trouble, and damned if the "Open 8 hours a day, 7 days a week!" place local to my house was closed because it was a Sunday.

So I had to go an hour across town to another place that tortured the crap out of me non-stop the 30 minutes I was there, and then ended up sending me home anyway without doing a thing because they decided the problem was bad enough I needed an oral surgeon, which meant now I was stuck until Monday anyway trying to find somebody who could help.

So Monday comes along and all of the oral surgeons I call won't have openings until October. I finally got through to one office that as luck would FINALLY have it, said they'd be willing to do it later this morning.

Unlike last year, I have much better dental insurance. For IV sedation through the full procedure to remove all four teeth, it'll be less than $480 out of pocket, which is a damn sight better than the $2,500 I was quoted for this same work a year ago at a different doctor's office.

Fingers crossed; by noon I'll hopefully be able to see if the light is the end of the tunnel or the headlights of an oncoming train...... :th_KO:

Fyi guys,

Soaking  a  bad tooth in whiskey will draw out the infection and also kills pain by 80%

Take a shot, tilt your head accordingly, soak the tooth as long as you can stand it,,(it will burn a little), then  SPIT OUT THE WHISKEY.

It will be full of infection so DONT swallow it.

It works guys.

Been doing  it for years.

I found that in an late 1800s  pioneer cook book medical section that belonged to my great  grandmothers.

I use seagram's 7, as that was the same whiskey  they also used for medicinal purposes.

My great grandmother also had her heart stop twice when she was about 100 years old and sick and unconscious. My grandmother put a couple teaspoons of whiskey in her mouth, and her heartbeat got stronger and she woke up.

Just fyi.

I too have done the toothache and whiskey thing before. Didn't know about it drawing out the infection, but it did relieve the pain quite a bit.

Man, I swung past a gunstore 2-3 times today in San Antonio. It is like a 30 to 60 minute wait, there are so many people outside waiting to get in. I'm not going to stand there that long just to go look and see what they have.

I will be visiting Durys guns shop in SA in a few days. Got the shipping conformation on the Ruger Ranch I ordered. Will see how it looks then.

I have been there 1x. They were very expensive and did not have that much.

I did go to that range/gun store on 1604 today. I forget the name. They have a lots of higher end 1911s.

Really thats strange Durys is a big shop usually well stock.
They just relocated a couple months ago which is good for me as they are now 5 min from my house vs over 40 before.
I am just using them as the transfer as they were in the list from Sportsmans outdoor whse so super easy.
Also John Dury is a customer of mine (private a/c owner) so its a return the favor thing.

Last time I was in the shop (old location off 37S) they were very well stocked.

I believe you are referring to Nardis for the indoor range although we have others so I may be incorrect.

I took my CHL class/test at Nardis yrs ago. Nice place but I dont care for indoor ranges. And now I shoot on my own place havent been to a pay range in about 3yrs now.

Ok, I looked up the names. Adelbridge is the store with the line I wanted to go see yesterday.

The one I did go to was Mission Ridge on 1604.

My girlfriend lives near the Drury Guns. We went in 1x last year. I don't remember them having near the stuff that Adelbridge has.

Mission Ridge always has several high end 1911s. So, those are fin to look at.

Ah OK
Alderbridge is where I bought my Ruger 77 .357 rifle. Also my buddy got his G30S there.
They do have a huge stock or did in January when I bought the rifle.

Never hit up Mission Ridge.
How was it?
You get to bring your ammo or they force you to buy their overpriced stuff?

I havent been in Durys since they relocated to the 410 location.

Well then she lives in my area.
Im off Nacogdoches outside the loop.

Work is 5 min or so from Alderbridge.

We should meet up for a cold one sometime.
Although now it would have to be in the parking lot of a Valero LOL!

Yea, after all this covid stuff is up, we can meet up. I haven't even eaten out anywhere since this started, and I rarely go anywhere. I have asthma, so I must be careful.

But yea, I have been making the drive from College Station to San Antonio for almost 4 years now. I am sick of it, but it is where she lives... I hope to get her to move one day. But as a piano teacher, it is hard for her to start over with zero students in a new city.

Yes, Drury on 4-10 looked like it had just opened in the new building when I went there. I drive right by it to get to my girlfriend's place.  And, they have some strange hours. They are not open as much as other gun shops. If I remember right they are closed on Mondays, and only 1/2 a day on Saturdays. Something like that. It's been a while since I was there... But, when I went the 1x, I was disappointed with the selection, and their prices were too high.

Mission Ridge. Wow. They are proud of their prices. Way high too. Although, they have no increased their prices with this gun rush. So now, they seem normal, which is sad in and of itself. And, they have an amazing selection of high end 1911s. I saw one yesterday that I wanted - for $3500!  :P

Mission Ridge costs a lot more to shoot there compared to the indoor range in College Station. I do not know if they make you buy their ammo, though. They might.... When I saw the range fee 2-3 years ago, I knew I would never shoot there. But, they have awesome stuff to look at. And, their gun rental choice is really amazing.

But, most guns are like $20-$25 to rent. Some are over $30 to rent. It costs $5 to rent a gun where I shoot at! But, Mission Ridge has an impressive selection to choose from. I've never seen such rental selections at a place before. It's like a complete gun store just for the rentals...

However, for rentals, you must use their ammo. By the time you get their ammo, the range fee and the rental fee f a gun you  wanna try... You are looking at $75 to $100, depending on what it is...

That's just crazy. I have rented many guns and saved money - seeing that I did not like it, and it prevented me from buying one... I don't think I'd pay almost $100 to try something, though. I can buy the gun, not like it and sell it - and lose less money than renting one there. But, their building is super expensive. They gotta pay for it some kinda way.

Oh well.

Nardis is same on rentals and ammo
25 a gun buy there ammo.
However the do offer a full auto selection for a small fee of course.

Well we will see where this cv19 bs ends up and maybe work it out.

I know the drag of out of town girl did 7 yrs of it SA to Rockport.

We did alternate so that helped but it wears on ya.

Many, many thanks for the well-wishes.

While I wished I'd have thought to use whiskey to burn off the infection, I'm just glad the ordeal is over. I went ahead and sprung for IV sedation using my employer dental insurance. It was a bit costly at $550, but I would much rather pay for that than the $2,500 I was quoted last year without it.

I gotta say if any of you in San Antonio ever need tooth work done, San Antonio Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery Associates is the place to go. The doctor was super friendly and the nursing staff was like a NASCAR pit crew. They did my intake, pre-operative workups, and surgeon's consultation in 45 minutes; from there I went directly into surgery and had all four teeth removed an hour later without feeling anything, even the needle for the IV.

Axxe, I wish you a (belated) happy anniversary -- sorry about not having responded sooner!

I'm glad you got the tooth fixed. I know that it's painful and extremely bothersome.

And thank you for the anniversary wishes. Very much appreciated sir.
