Title: The OFFICIAL Ruger Thread!
Post by: Shipwreck on April 27, 2011, 09:20:36 AM
Now that we have no "Groups" anymore, I thought I'd start these threads... Previously, there was a "group" for each manufacturer... One could talk about that brand and/or post pics.

Anyway, if ya got a Ruger and are proud of it, this is the place to do a yee haw or post up a pic or whatever!

Rugers are bang for the buck kings.

I've had a p94, p90, wonderful, tank-like guns.

I have an sr9 that is my back up carry gun. The thin frame makes it more comfortable than my g26.

The sr9 is very accurate. and after an inital dud striker, it has been flawless through 900 rds with no cleaning.

I also have a stainless super blackhawk in 44mag. If i ever need to shoot bear, this is what I'm grabbing.

OK, somebody here has to be able to help on this one. I have a Ruger Standard .22 semi auto, the first model that eventually became the Mark I. Disassembles like the Mark I, and that's the problem.
If you have any experience with one of these guns, you know that it's easy to disassemble, but to reassemble it, you have to literally hold it upside down, at a certain angle, hold your tongue exactly right, and utter some tribal incantations to get it to go back together. I have disassembled it twice, and after major efforts, had to take it to a gunsmith each time to get it back together.
I would love to PAY someone who knows how to do this properly to spend some time with me letting me do this over and over until I get it right. I want someone there who can actually get the thing together right in my presence.
Any takers?

I have a Mark II gov't target model that I bought new in mid-1990.  Love that thing.  Had a friend with one who never cleaned his for thousands of rounds and it kept on ticking.  I fired it yesterday for the first time in three years...cleaned it before and after.  You're right about re-assembly.  That strut is the part you're talking about.  It is a pain to get in place; usually takes me a couple tries.  There are a couple of good YouTube videos that would be helpful, and you can still download the manual for the Mark I from Ruger.  That one has no pics on disassembly/reassembly.  The Mark II manual does.

The worst part for me isn't getting that part in place.  It's the removal of the barrel that challenges me.  After all this time, I still have to take a mallet to the back of it to break it free from the frame.  One good tap on a small block of wood on the end, and it comes right off.  Replacing it takes a few strikes on the front (!) to get it in position.  Many years ago, I tried removing the barrel w/o first taking out the mainspring assembly.  Oops.  Got mad and really wailed on it.  Ended up taking the end of the barrel/receiver out of round just slightly.  Called Ruger, and long story short, they fixed it promptly and returned it to me...no charge.  Been flawless ever since.

I cleaned my original magazine yesterday...first time in 21 years.  Almost looked like there was some mud on the bottom of the follower and around the metal piece at the bottom of the spring.  Functioned perfectly, however.  Cleaned up easily, like new.

I like Rugers.  I attended a Hamilton Bowen class at Tishomingo and I learned alot.  I am looking for a 45ACP cylinder for my NMBH, I may have to buy a convertable to get one!  I am also going to sell my Ruger .30 carbine when I get enough posts.  Here is a 45LC I cut down to 4 5/8"  George M.

Went to the gun show at GRB today.  Saw only one SR1911, tagged at ... $899.  Whoa.  $100 over MSRP?  No wonder it was still sitting there today.

Still waiting for these to be more readily available.

Here's a look @ our late 1990's vintage Super Blackhawk from the "business end."  .44mag.  4.5 inch barrel, steel ejector housing and a trigger job by a gentleman that knows how.  After market Pach "decellorator" stocks help tame the beast.  If we had to reduce our collection to only one handgun (and we have no intention whatsoever of doing so), this would be the one:

Here's a somewhat unusual SBH--a stainless steel Bisley in .44 mag w/5.5" barrel.  This one from a 1000 piece run made for a major sporting goods store on the east coast (can't remember the name) back in the early 2K's.  This one has not been shot much.
These are not our only Ruger firearms.  We like Rugers.  A lot.  The Ruger company seems to build a terrific product for a very good price.  We don't know how they do it, but we are glad they do.

We trudge on.

The wife loves hers. It's her primary carry arm. When we first got the pistol it was a bit fussy about ammo. but after 250 rounds it feeds everything well. I can get fair groups at 10 yards with 115gr Gold Dots. If you have large hands you will want the pinky extension on the 10 round magazine.

Count me in as a big Ruger fan.
Blackhawks... Security/Service/Speed 6's....P90's...P95DC's...new designs to improve the Mini-14's...all good.

But...why the new models when there was nothing wrong with the old ones?  For instance, SR-9's and MKIII .22's?
Why Chinese air rifles w/ the Ruger name on them?  I guarantee it, open the door for the chinese and next you know you will be finding them supplying internal parts, etc.
Why more plastic parts on the 10-22's?

Be careful Ruger, please!

They are 5 star speed loaders and they do make them for the SP101 as I have a set. Here's the link to the SP101 models:

Got my Wiley Clapp edition GP100. Ran 100 rounds of assorted 38 Special and 357 magnum loads through it. The sights seem to be regulated for heavier bullet loads. It's dead on with 140gr, 158gr and 180gr 357 loads, and shoots a touch low with 125gr ammo. Dead on with Buffalo Bore 158gr LSWCHP  +P ammo and low with Federal +P 129gr Hydra-shok or Remington +P 125gr SJHP. Dead on with my target hand loads 158gr LSWC or 148gr LHBWC at 750fps or 850fps on a 357 case.

I test for sight alignment, velocity (over a chronograph), and initial accuracy shooting from an old Outer's Pistol Perch. I then shoot using a modified Weaver stance, for general accuracy and handling testing. When I describe how a pistol or revolver shoots I'm talking about unsupported in the modified Weaver stance or a Bullseye stance.

My current favorite is a 4" GP100 I bought new, gosh - I'm gonna guess 25+ years ago. Great firearm!

The second Ruger I own is a 4.2" Redhawk chambered in .41 mag. Bad choice of caliber, unfortunately. I got caught up in the short-lived .41 mag craze that never quite caught on. If'n I had a do-over, I'd have bought the same gun chambered in .44 mag, of course.

Lastly I recently purchased a .38 spcl LCR for pocket carry when I walk the dog at night.

Anyway, thanks for having me!

And the rifle is? Clean for sure but same caliber as the pistol?

Henry Steel Big Boy in 45Colt, shows right on the barrel.

See it now. Use an I-pad so some stuff is hard to see. Figured it was .45 Colt.

Going to pick up its little brother this afternoon. I'm going to shoot the L-Comp, my 357 Blackhawk and the newest Henry right after I pick it up.

I am also a huge fan of caliber matching sets pistol/rifle and so on. It just seems to be uncommon practice these days. I have been drooling over the thought a .357mag or .44mag combo for what seems like ages...But yea know, money is the only hurdle I have to overcome...  :icon_wink:

I've got to put in a plug for the Ruger No. 1.  I'm sort of a purist when it comes to rifles.  They need to be pretty and they need to be functional to the limit.  The old falling block action still has a role in modern sporting guns and it does that function flawlessly.  I own one presently, a 25-06 and I've previously owned a 6MM Remington and a .243.  You hunt a little differently when you only  have one round immediately available but I consider that a plus.  Yes, I've passed up shots that I might have tried if I had a repeater, but I don't regret it.  They're fine guns!

I am on the hunt for one Ruger
Model 77 .357 bolt action rifle.
When I find one at right cost and good condition I will snag it.
Just an I want gun.
