I think I need this. Those that have the shockwave is it worth having a non nfa shotgun?

No.
It’s not all that much shorter than a 18” shotgun.

A 12” 870 with a pistol grip or even a full stock is really handy. A 18” pistol grip is likewise pretty useful if you learn to shoot it.  But the 14” with the long “turkey neck”? It’s ok but I think you will want a rep butt stock on your gun.

Well I'm NOT sure what you mean by a "novelty" but I'd love to have one of the FEW 14" barreled Winchester Model 94 rifles that were originally manufactured by Winchester for the LE & overseas trade.
(I collect police gear from "the olden days".)
