Save the life of my old partner
« on: September 13, 2017, 07:17:15 PM »
My B.C. Muroku/Charles Daley o/u got sick during the opening day of dove season.  Gunsmith says that the lower barrel cocking arm is broken.  He has checked his primary old part suppliers with no luck.  Had this gun for a lot of years and although I'm not adverse to retiring it, I'd hoped to do it in perfect working condition.  Any leads would be greatly appreciated.

Find you an oldschool gunsmith -- not an AR kit builder, 1911 feed ramp dremeler, and sometime cerakote hobbyist -- that actually fabricates and heat treats his own parts and give him a call, see if maybe he can make it himself and install it. If he's good, he can figure out what the part looked like before it broke, and/or figure out how it was installed and what it was supposed to function like before it broke. It won't be cheap, but that's the only thing I can think of.

There was a guy that did that here in S.A. -- I don't know if he's still in the game or not. You might need to look locally wherever you are to find one, or look somebody up online that specializes in old restorations.

It's hard to free people from the chains of stupidity when they wear them like jewelry.

Didn't Muruko build the Winchester 101? might be worth a look there.

I would look for the part yourself. Manufacturer, model should get you an exploded diagram. Then Dempsey match the part and search where you can order it. A gunsmith, that is a real gun Smith can manufacture the part. Maybe a tool and die maker can also.

Good luck!

Many thanks for the tips.  We don't have a wide selection of gunsmiths in the RGV and certainly no old world artisans who can mill and temper a new part, but I do have a friend who has been rebuilding shotguns for most of his life that is pretty savvy on all things that go bang.  I'll pass these clues along to him and hope that one thread leads to another and we will come up with a solid source.
