Shotgun shells and recoil
« on: May 14, 2017, 12:21:20 PM »
Which 12 gauge shell has the lightest recoil? Is it going to be bird shot? Is it going to be 2 3/4" #4 shot? I am not real familiar with shotguns as I've not ever owned one. I'm buying a cheap maverick 88 today for a home defense gun for my 68 year old mother. She's 4'11 and weighs like 115.

You might look at these. Kind of expensive though and hard to find.

^^^^

Let her pick the weapon after firieng each, as it needs to fit in her hands, not yours.  And Tango is right, most older women are done with hefty recoil.  A 20 (or even 20 Ga or .410) could be better choices than a 12.

i'll also throw in -
if mama goes to test fire something, don't
forget good hearing protection. i see a lot
of first timers that are repulsed by the report
of whatever they are trying out.
when someone is kicking in your door, it won't
really matter 2 cents worth.
good luck. god bless mama

a 410 sounds like a much more viable option now that you all mention it. Any recommendations on 410s that won't break the bank?

.410 pump's seem to be more expensive than 12 gauges, where the more inexpensive .410's are single shots or bolt action.

But here's one on gunbroker for $75   http://www.gunbroker.com/item/645204813

Good luck!

stevens 94, H&R/NEF, Rossi, etc.
bunches of decent singles to choose from.
your mom is probably just like my mom,
it's not like she's going to be in a beirut-type firefight.
a good single will likely do just fine. i have a couple myself

I'm thinking a semi-auto in 12 of some kind should at least make the "see how manageable this is" test list, just for thoroughness' sake. I was impressed with the carbine-like recoil of a friend of mine's 12 even using "hot" (for birdshot) loads as recommended by the factory to break in the gun and prevent FTF's.

Also possible to test in a pump action, would be the low recoil (possibly low flash too; IDR) 2.75" police buck that comes in the plain brown 5 round cardboard boxes from Olin Cartridge Corp. They're about $4.99 at Wal-Mart.

Finally if she doesn't like the shotgun idea, there's the H&R 929 to consider which is probably scraping the bottom of the he barrel I'll admit, but short of hiring somebody to follow her around with a PKP Pecheneg, that's about all I've got.

Well less weight in the pellets and velocity they will affect the recoil. 7/8s load vs 1 1/4 oz load. 1200 fps vs 1350fps. Find low recoil shells. But recoil is also perceive so don't make a big deal out of it and she might enjoy it.

Semi Autos will have less recoil than pumps.

Still looking into 410s... As soon as I pick one up I'll let you guys and gals know. Took a 12 gauge to the range  yesterday and with target loads it kicked pretty hefty. No way my mom could have fired that thing.
