Can I own a gun
« on: April 09, 2018, 10:42:07 PM »
Hey guys,

I was charged with a Class A misdemeanor back in 2007. I was initially charged with assault causing bodily injury- family violence but they changed it to just assault causing bodily injury. (My ex and I got into an argument and I grabbed her wrist as she walked off so we could continue talking. I told her she needed to go back to her parents house. She got upset and called the cops. It wasn’t in a violent way and she wasn’t hurt). I plead guilty and paid a fine ( I was young and had never been in trouble - should have got a lawyer). I have never been in trouble since then. Can I buy/possess a gun in Texas? I grew up hunting/shooting guns. I have never tried to buy a gun since that charge. I’d like to get back to shooting again. Thanks

Pardon me for suggesting the OBVIOUS: You need to call a lawyer & get the correct answer.
(I was a LEO for a long, long time & won't even try to give you legal advice.)

Offhand, I don't know any lawyers on this site, though there may be one/some

Form 4437 (link below) is required to be completed before you purchase a firearm from someone with a Federal Firearms License. All stores such as Academy and your local gun or pawn shop will have you complete and place your signature on the form prior you being approved or disapproved by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms. If you answered yes to question 11.i I would say that, legally, you cannot buy one. Anyone with a felony conviction on record is barred by law from owning or possessing a firearm. As others have said contact an attorney if you have questions.

1) Welcome.
2) Spend $2-300 for an 1/2-1 hour of a lawyer’s time, who specializes in criminal / family law. You need an attorney who has a legal responsibility to you alone in this matter, and knows the ins and outs of the relevant law.  If you are not paying for someone to look into your specifics, you could be taking a massive risk.

Good luck.
