Toyota killing its Scion brand

Quote
Toyota is committing corporate filicide.

The automaker has announced that it is killing its youth-oriented Scion brand and transitioning the models currently sold by the division to Toyota in August.

And about 50,000 of those are in Austin.
Really surprised they couldn't make a go of it.

I thought for sure Scion had a hit with their FR S sports car. I drove one when they first came out and was impressed with the handling but seriously underwhelmed with the (for me) anemic 200 HP power plant. It appears their only ambition with that model was to compete against the Mazda Miata and Hyundai Genesis coupe. IMO if they would have provided a forced induction option, either turbo or super charger, and boosted that HP by 80-100 HP they would have had a winner. That model still lives on in Europe as the Toyota 86.

I've honestly never understood the different brands like that.  GMC and Chevy are the biggest ones that's make me scratch my head.

Most automakers have been consolidating recently. Chrysler  eliminated the Plymouth brand, FoMoCo killed Mercury, GM killed off Pontiac, Oldsmobile and AM General, and Nissan killed the Datsun brand before many here were born. I'm sure there have been other casualties that I can't think of but those are the main ones.
