Legitimate Advanced Training
« on: March 18, 2017, 04:51:10 PM »
Anybody taken any classes from professional instructors?  Who were they?  How was it?  What drills or instruction really stuck?

Until then, his book Handgun Combatives (http://amzn.to/2nDx8Su) is a good start.

I've got to find my copy of it. I'm going to be pissed if it's in a box somewhere.

I've taken a couple great classes from Paul Howe at Combat Shooting And Tactics in Nacogdoches.  Paul is former Delta Force and was part of the Black Hawk Down battle.  He's the real deal, no fluff, awesome all around guy.  Here are a couple of my write-ups with some video.

My bad, never did come back and do a write up.  Dom, you want to make a thread or shall I?

I'm looking to take a couple more of Dave's classes, maybe a class or two at Tiger Valley in my area, and I don't know what after that.  Paul comes pretty highly recommended.

Paul is also, at minimum, semi-retiring.  His classes later this year aren't guaranteed, let alone anything in 2018.

I heard that recently.  So is Dave, I believe.  I think next year is Spaulding's last year.

Go for it man, I've been meaning to but either haven't had time or haven't thought of it when I briefly had some time.

New guy, pulling a resurrection post.

If you have friends or family in Oklahoma, or if you want a roadtrip, one of the best bangs for the buck is Will Andrews.  I think he's now at Wilshire Gun.  Its been a few years back, when I still lived in OKC, but I took an 8 hour class with Will and Spencer Keepers. 8 hours, 500 rounds and about 300 draw reps.  I felt pretty good going in, I was really happy on the way out!

The class was a mix- a couple of ladies, with marginal firearms experience, 3 Airforce SPs, 2 new IDPA shooters, and a few of us "ordinary" sorts.  Everyone had a good time, everyone came away with something new.

The guy who taught me CQB/CQC had a license to teach based on the training and combat experience (vietnam) and was a close friend

He never had a  "school" , but built  building/houses for fun and used them to train others he knew

I have taken a few classes from Clint Smith of Thunder ranch when it was in Texas. Things that stuck with me...

There is no advanced training. Everything is remedial. By and large that is true. What you do with a dozen guys you do by yourself.

Use cover and get off the cover. Don’t get sucked into it.

Have a gun that works. I like 1911.  You like glocks. As long as it runs we can teach you how to shoot it. A good shooter can do more with a single shot than a novice can do with a belt fed.

These are just techniques. Consider them but if they don’t work for you then don’t use them. Use what works for you.
