WTB: Toshiba Win7 Restore Disks
« on: April 11, 2016, 03:37:34 AM »
Greetings once again, all.

Due to an unfortunate hardware partitioning accident, my Toshiba laptop basically lost its hidden on-board recovery partition before I could burn myself some recovery disks. Toshiba is nuts and wants $30 plus shipping for a new set of disks which is ridiculous and out of the question, since I'll only ever need them once for like 45 minutes.

Therefore, I would really appreciate borrowing someone's extra set of recovery disks, and would happily pay shipping both ways. Donor system must have:
-Windows 7 Home Premium OS
-A 64-bit install
*Bonus points if donor system is a member of the Satellite P755 line

I only need the two OS disks and not any additional driver disk(s), since I can/will download the drivers myself online from Toshiba myself.

Thank you,
-G.

It is possible you may not need Toshiba's recovery disks.  Look around on the laptop and see if the sticker that has the product code key is on  there.  Since you already knows it's a 64-bit install of Win7 Home Premium I would start out with finding a Win7 Home Premium install disc and doing a fresh install.  It can be an OEM disc....not a Toshiba.  Win7 is actually pretty good with finding and installing drivers.  It doesn't matter if the Win7 disc has been used on another computer since you will be using the product code key on the laptop itself to activate Win7.
After you get Win7 on there, and if it has the drivers there to get on the internet, you can go to Toshiba's website and download other needed drivers from there.  If not, you can download drivers onto a USB flash drive on another PC and then transfer them to the laptop.
Also, $30 isn't really too bad for restore discs.  If you can't find a copy of Win7 locally holler at me.

I think I may have to pass on the A200 disks unless they're Win7. Thank you for offering though.

Unfortunately the sticker on the bottom of the unit is illegible. I don't know why Microsoft thought fit to make license stickers out of stuff that's so easily defaced, if they're sticking it onto the bottom of what once was probably an $800+ laptop. I'm not in crippling NEED of Win7 disks though -- the reason being is that I'm going to sell the laptop and wanted to make it a little more presentable before I got rid of it, thus why I thought $30 was nuts to buy new ones.

Would a sticker from XP help?

The product code key on a sticker is specific to the version of Windows it is connected to.
If you're just going to sell it then I suggest creating a bootable disk with a disk wiping program on it (using another PC of course.) (You can google these...with instructions.)  You would boot from the CD/DVD and then wipe the hard drive clean.  Just letting any potential buyer know that the hard drive is blank and that they will have to provide their own version of Windows would be sufficient.

Unfortunately the XP sticker would not help -- I can say from experience that unfortunately nobody wants to buy anything with Windows XP on it.

For this same reason, nobody wants to buy a laptop with no OS of any kind either -- I've been getting lowball offers for $45 less than what I've been asking on it because it's without at least Win7 on it.

I may just keep the HDD and sell it for the price they're asking -- anything less is ridiculous.

How much are you asking?
It's hard to free people from the chains of stupidity when they wear them like jewelry.
Freedom or free stuff, you only get one.

If they buy it from you say for $50, and are able to get restore disks from Toshiba for $30, they'd have a working laptop for $80.  For them that's not bad.  If it's worth more to you then perhaps consider getting the restore disks.   Do you know the specs of the laptop...CPU speed...RAM?  The initial problem, was it user error...or could there be an issue with the HD?
