Okay, the new article is up!

http://blog.westernpowders.com/2018/05/the-heavyweight-semi-finals-heavy-bullets-for-the-9mm/

Please read it along with the II Part article by Charles Schwartz

I was just made aware when I came in from outdoors to check my email last time today. The editor for the blog as well as very well rounded super-human simply because of the numbers of Fires/day he puts out for Western Powder Co.; well, he says that it is the best thing (non-fiction) I've ever written for the blog. And it's been a few years since my last!

I hope you'll have questions. I'll answer anything I can and am asked to. I'm kinda looking forward to the question I'd like to hear, even if in part if it seems beneficial to you as a handloader.  :icon_wink:

Good job.  I'm impressed with the Berry's in that test IF they are significantly lower cost than the other options as usual.

GG, Midway sells them by 250 count and up. I should also note that while we can find depth of penetration in Gel by shooting into water and collecting the necessary data for the calculation, I'm still suspicious that the water test might be a bit tougher on bullets than shooting into gel. I told Berry's about my results where I couldn't get close to their 1075 Max Velocity rating, but they really didn't have a response. But at 976 FPS it's still flying as fast as most factory 147 gr. JHP defense loads, and I think it might have better potential for the sub-compacts like the Shield I tested with.  :icon_wink:

I just so happen to have a Shield as well.  :-)

Quick online search shows the Berry's are about $0.15 each.  1K would last me the rest of my life....plinkers are home-cast here.

I will continue to test them, but ultimately, I believe that the best application for the Berry's 147 gr. HHP is compact or sub-compact 9 x 19mm pistols along with an easy load to master in service pistol for those who want a lower recoil load at 147 grs. They're probably less likely to penetrate as many barriers indoors as well.

While they don't have the velocity potential I had hoped for, even at 1075 FPS, they' would have still been sub-sonic, as are the Remington 147 gr. JHP and the same weight Gold Dot which could be an advantage for those who do use a sound suppressor on their pistols.

The 147 gr. XTP is, without a doubt, super-sonic capable from pistols and could be an excellent way to load for 9mm carbines that are rated +P like the Ruger PC.  :icon_wink:
