RUGER LC9S PRO or S&W SHIELD 9MM??
« on: April 20, 2017, 10:55:51 PM »
Friends,

I've been offered a S&W Shield in 9mm  AND a Ruger LC9S Pro for about the same price.
(About 20.oo difference in price, delivered.)

WHICH handgun would you buy for every day concealed carry??
(I've NOT shot either handgun.)

I have the LC9s (not pro).  I believe the biggest difference is a really nice trigger.
Also have an M&P 9 not shield. Nice gun too.

But o my 2 similar models I'd go with the Pro.

Shield 9mm and it ain't even close.
Is this new or used? Shield's can be had for around $310 currently and have a $75 mail in rebate.
Cheapest prices on LC9S Pro seem to be around $290, so you can get the Shield cheaper in the end.

I previously had two Shields at one time. Great guns.

Domineaux,

As the forum's "friendly neighborhood cheapskate", I really LIKE "cheap", especially if it gets me something just as good or even better than the more expensive item for less $$$.

I hear ya on that. I'm a cheapskate for the most part too, but will happily spend a little more for a better option.
I bought my Shield 9mm for around $380 and would have no problem at all paying $500 for it after knowing how good it is and how much I like it.

Domineaux,

NOW I've got to find me a good-quality southpaw, leather OTB holster for the Shield. = "Hard to Find Holsters" is out of business  (Mr. Dennis passed away before Christmas 2016.) & used to sell GREAT brand-name holsters for 60% or less of retail. = I paid 16 bucks OTD for my LH DeSantis holster for my Sig-Sauer P225.

Domineaux,

I don't like kydex or any other sort of "plastic" holster. = Given a choice, I'd buy yet another HORSEHIDE or SHARKSKIN on-the-belt "tortilla" holster but the guy that I knew in Laredo has passed away. = His sharkskin holster that he made me for my S&W Model 1917 revolver is 30+ years old & still looks/works FINE.
(Either brown or black would be OK, as it will be covered by a long shirt, vest or jacket. = Except on the farm or while fishing on HOT days, I don't carry openly.)

Consider checking out Nardis indoor shooting range here in SA. They have like 30-40 pistols on hand that they allow for rental, and although it's been quite a while since I last went, I believe they have one of each gun that you're looking at buying (I'm almost positive they had at least one, possibly several variants of the Shield).

I'd call to double-check and make sure before you go. Also, unless you're tagging along with someone who is already a member there, the entry fee for a non-member like $25 plus rental and ammo (for rental guns) fees. But, it would go a long way to letting you compare which you like more.

As for the holster, although I've never bought from him personally there's a guy that has his own leather making business here on this forum -- Lone Rider Leather.

I considered both and after shooting, I disagree that the Shield has an inferior trigger. Shield is outstanding, easily concealable, and hold an extra round...I like Ruger, and own 2..but if you plan on appendix carry, look at a P290RS also..a tiny bit more expensive but its a Sig...and The trigger is around 9lbs long pull...no way it accidentally gets pulled on draw...I love mine, and carry it over a Shield...Crossbreed has the best appendix holster too and is 15% off till end of April

To All,

I bought a S&W Shield (without thumb safety) today for my new EDC piece.
(Will load it with HORNADY CRITICAL DEFENSE, just as I do with my Sig-Sauer P225/P6..

311.00 before 75.00 rebate from the factory. =  236.oo  (FREE S&H, too.)
("Color me: PLEASED, clear down to the ground.)

Now I need to find a "tortilla" on-the-belt holster for it & PREFERABLY in SHARKSKIN  or HORSEHIDE.

FWIW I carry my Shield in a Remora holster.  Disappears under a tucked short and works well IWB with shirt out as well.  Have also used it as a pocket holster, although that requires deep roomy pockets.  YMMV
