used to be a Golf fanatic (when living in Hawaii I averaged probably 4-5 days a week playing and played most of Hawaii's non-private courses) - but put the clubs up a few years ago - don't care to watch on tv (or in person) but I do check-in on a couple of televised tournaments - the Masters ('cause I love the look of the course) - anything played at Pebble ('cause I've played it and it sits on the beautiful Pacific) - the Open Championship (being played this week - and I like it because the US PGA and the USGA don't have a lot of say about the course preparation !!!!!) - and lastly, the Ryder Cup (for whom I always root for "Europe" (vs the USA))

all other tournaments are crap, IMHO

Played in the 80's, was required if you were in any management job with Firestone. Was terrible. My t shots looked like a carrier launch, start out low and start to climb and peel off to the right, never to be seen again!
Got to play 9 holes with Lee Trevino in Austin on a rainy day. He was amazing, played 9 holes at par with only a 9 iron! All the time telling stories/jokes.

You need to try it with a 12 gauge shotgun (birdshot)

I also used to play 3-5 times a week. I played up until January 2004. I played a lot of munis and due to several attempts at taking divots off of hard pan I injured my left shoulder.
When I played, I custom built my own clubs, I walked the course, I carried my bag, and I played strictly by the rules.
And I used to really piss people off when I told them "You didn't beat me. We weren't playing the same game. I was playing Golf, by the rules. I don't know what you call the game you were playing but it wasn't Golf. The rules are too different from what I play."

When I hit these with Boomer, they have a nice clean opening and small exit, still a playable ball.

Had a great time at the First TexMex Invitational this weekend. Boomer not only hit the 300 yard gong but sent it twisting and flying.

Played some when I was younger. Had a fair long game and a decent short game. Course fees and equipment became a little expensive for a newly married soldier so I put the clubs away. Picked them up again a couple of times in the late eighties and played charity scramble when my brother was one of the maintenance managers at Oak Hill (now Oak Country) Country Club in De Soto.
My son's in laws live on the golf course at Hilltop Lakes in Leon County northwest of Madisonville. I've been out there a couple of times for birthday parties and BBQ's but haven't played although it is tempting.
Tango - When I was at Ft. Ord in '77 & '78 I worked security at the Bing Crosby Pro Am at Pebble Beach. The year before and the year after he passed away. Best part was the absolutely stunning scenery, the food they had for us and a three month day pass for 17 mile drive. Wife and I took full advantage of that several times.

I still call that tournament "the Crosby" and what an "event" it was (when Bing was alive, before his pig of a wife screwed up the whole thing) - I can remember the likes of Phil Harris, et al, playing in it - now they've got dolts like bill murray and george lopez flopping around the course

took my Son to Pebble for a week of golf and just plain fun a while back - couldn't get consecutive nights at the Lodge so we stayed at the Inn at Spanish Bay - very nice.  we played Spanish Bay, Spyglass and Pebble twice each - I still have all my scorecards from that week

at Spanish Bay, each evening as the sun sets, there's a Bag Piper who walks the length of #1 (which is a straight away par 5, towards the ocean) and he times his walk so that the last you hear of the Pipes happens just as the sun goes below the horizon - a fun and goose-bumpy way to spend Happy Hour after a day of golf (there were 3 Pipers, one of whom was a gal, and they rotated doing the walk (perhaps weekly))

with each drive along the Kali coast I always make it a point to drive the 17 Mile Drive and always stop at the Lodge for a drink - then a walk out to the 18th Green - not many places on earth as beautiful as that stretch of coastline

I also had my 1st legal beer at the bar inside the Del Monte Lodge (I think that was it..?) - was in basic training (Ft Ord, of course) and went on a bus tour of that area - October 1959

ok hotshot - I can come up with at least 60 golf venues in the Houston area alone (for those who indulge) - all legal - how many places can you legally shoot that boomstick you keep posting about on everyone else's thread (no matter the subject) ?

I used to golf quite a bit back 20 years ago. It was fun. But I drank back then, and we would have a good old time drinking & whacking balls WHEREVER. I was never really serious about it.

What used to drive the SERIOUS golfers nuts was when we would make bets on closest to the pin, etc, and BEAT THEM.

We would be 1/2 drunk not giving a damn, laughing and cutting up, and beat em.

Once on the last hole, the standard bet was everyone threw a $10 bill down, closest to the pin got it.

I won that several times. I had a 7 iron on that hole that was perfect. I hit the pin two weeks in a row one time.

We never cared what our score was either, which also drove those guys nuts because sometimes we would beat them.

We had the closest to the pin bet one time, I hit mine with a driver about 50 feet high over the pin into the woods.  Then all a sudden, really loud,, KERRRWHACK.  Hit a tree and rolled right out onto the green, closest to the pin.

Another time, On the same hole, same bet, my buddy, who carried on as much as me,, sliced his right into the oncoming fairway where they were mowing.  KERRR BANG,, Off the hood of the tractor and rollled right out onto the green. Closest to the pin.  :thumbsup1:

We had ALOT of fun golfing.  NOT giving a damn really seemed to help.  :rocknroll2:
