For WHAT it is, and WHAT I use it for, ( varmint hunting) 5.56 is fine.
5.56 bridges the  range gap between 22 mag and 270/30-06 nicely.
I do prefer the 20" barrel A4  though.

Politicians are like diapers, they should be changed often, and for the same reason.

Since the WoT seems everyone wants carbine length.

I have 3 AR-15's, all 5.56, (two built with USGI Surplus uppers).
A1, A2 (converted to A4), and a 16" carbine.

Ft. Hood (at least in the 80's) allows ranchers free use of land for grazing cattle.
Cows are not that bright, and I have seen quite a few sustain hits when they wandered onto live fire ranges.

I can confirm that an M16a1 with M193 ball ammo will just about blow the front leg off of a cow at 250-300 meters,
the bone is shattered and leaves the rest of the leg hanging by the skin.

One or two hits with a .50 BMG in the round steak section will take one down,

On a side note, other cows will not drag their buddy from the battlefield, they will continue eating while their buddy is lying there.
In Texas, "He needed killin' " is a defense to prosecution.

5.56 just because of ammo availability and if ever need be not so bad in an urban or suburban environment from an over penetration standpoint (given proper bullet choice).

.308 - all purpose, good for anything that moves on the North American continent

AR-50 - .50 BMG    Damn accurate from prone position at 1000 yards+ with Match barrel, and very reasonable cost.
If you haven't fired one, you don't know what you're missing.

Does it have the same weight and recoil of a Barrett M-107A1....I have fired one of these
The AR-50 is a bit stronger recoil than an M107-A1 (Boomer), but not bad.

Ha.
That's a relatively modern problem.
